Spending Power Given To Bristol Neighbourhoods

Tuesday, February 9th 2010 06:00

Bristol's St George District will have its first taste today in deciding how City Council money is spent in their area.

New budget powers for neighbourhoods across Bristol mean local people will have a say on how cash is used on services including road repairs, street cleaning and open spaces.

The St George Neighbourhood Partnership meeting is one of a series marking the latest step in the devolution of more control to local communities on how money is spent in their communities.

A range of local people will be involved in the decision making process including residents, St
George councillors, police, fire and rescue and health services.

Councillor Bev Knott, Cabinet Member for Care and Neighbourhoods, said:

"This year marks the arrival of real change for Neighbourhood
Partnerships.  Increasingly decisions about local services will be taken
within the community by people who have personal knowledge of local
issues and accessible to all who live in the area.

Here is an opportunity for local decision making to improve services
and make them more efficient because decision makers are part of the community.

It is also about bringing the whole decision making process out of
the Council House and into the citys communities so that people will
not feel remote from this process".
