Graffiti over inscription at Memorial Stadium

Graffiti has been sprayed on the entrance gates to Bristol Rovers' Memorial Stadium.

Overnight, tags and Bristol City FC slogans were painted across either side of the gate, as well as on various walls and across the inscription itself.

The memorial commemorates the city's rubgy union players who died during World War I.

On Bristol Rovers' website, it says the tag, which has been put in a number of locations, features a laurel wreath with the letters 'ADA' inside and the words 'Bristol City' underneath.

Spokesperson for Bristol Rovers, Kirsty Pugh told us what the messages from the culprits say:

"There is some foul language there, but mainly it's a repetition of a graffiti tag, which is a Bristol City tag which has been put in various places, and then other bits with 'City' scrawled on walls.

"The foul language and things like that on their own are annoying, but to do it on a memorial like that is clearly overstepping the mark, and I think the people responsible should be ashamed of themselves."

She added that they do not know yet how much it will cost to repair the damage:

"We've started painting over bits of it already, but we've got to get a stone mason in to actually look at the memorial gate itself because it's Bath stone and there's the inscription on there so it's going to have to be done properly.  It's not just a paint job."
