Body Found In Portsmouth Is Bristol Student

Monday, February 8th 2010 12:45

Police in Portsmouth have confirmed that a body found on a beach in the city is that of a student from Bristol.

21 year old Richard Staight was a student at Portsmouth University.  His body was discovered by a passer by at around 8am on Friday morning.  A post mortem was carried out later the same day which established he died as a result of drowning.

Richard was on a night out with friends who last saw him around quarter past twelve that morning when he left a bar in the Gunwharf Quays area of the city.  Police are trying to establish if anyone else saw him after that time.

Officers say they are keen to find out more about Richard's last movement and how he came to be in the water but say they have not launched a murder investigation.

Anyone with any information in relation to this incident is asked to contact Fratton police station on 0845 045 45 45.
