Skipper makes 128 against Durham in their latest LV County Championship match at Taunton.

Trescothick made 128 after opting to bat first, a tough decision justified by Somerset's total of 287-4 after rain had delayed the start until 1.10pm.

Arul Suppiah (54) and Nick Compton (45) made important contributions, but it was Trescothick who dominated, taking his run tally in his last five Championship innings to 551 at an average of 184.

At the close Marcus said: "When the coin came down and I realised I had won the toss I really didn't know what to do, but I came down on the side of batting.

"Then it started to rain and I went back in to the umpires and asked if we could re-toss! The answer was no, of course, and I still didn't know if I had done the right thing.

"Thankfully, despite the rain, the pitch didn't do a great deal. Ian Blackwell bowled well and got a bit of turn, which hopefully augurs well for us later in the game, but we need to get a few more runs on the board first.

"I'm not sure how much play we will get tomorrow because the forecast is bad. To bat once in the game we probably need to get 500 and there is a lot of work to do for that to happen.

"Getting a double hundred last week really helped me and you have to cash in when your brain is working well and you are playing better. I feel in good form and hopefully it will continue."

Only 15 overs were lost, despite the delayed start after an early lunch was taken at 12.30pm. Trescothick elected to take first use of a green looking pitch, which as is so often the case at Taunton, did not offer as much assistance to the seamers as appeared likely.

Suppiah helped his captain put on 119 for the first wicket and had reached a half-century off 85 balls with 10 fours before being trapped lbw by a delivery from former team-mate Blackwell that seemed to turn.

Trescothick smacked  11 fours in reaching fifty off 71 deliveries and was unbeaten on 78 when tea was taken at 154-1 after 40 overs.

The final session was also scheduled to feature 40 overs and saw Trescothick and Compton extend their second wicket stand to 113 before the latter aimed to clip Benkenstein away on the leg side and Scott Borthwick took a sharp catch at short mid-wicket.

Trescothick had reached his hundred off 149 balls, with 17 fours, and celebrated with his only six, pulled over a short mid-wicket boundary off Benkenstein.

Benkenstein took his revenge soon afterwards as the Somerset captain, eager to push the score along, drove in the air to extra cover where Mark Stoneman took a comfortable catch.

From 232-1, Somerset slipped to 249-4 when James Hildreth, one of only two batsmen with more runs than Trescothick in the Championship First Division, failed for once and was yorked by Matthew Claydon for seven.

But Zander de Bruyn and Craig Kieswetter saw their team through to the close and will be looking to add to the two batting points already gained when play resumes this morning.
