Former Bristol City Boss Gary Johnson

Gary Johnson has praised the appointment of Keith Millen as the new man in charge at Ashton Gate.

It was announced yesterday that Keith Millen would replace Steve Coppell after his shock resignation.

Millen has been at the club for eleven years and worked under former manager Gary Johnson.

On Bristol City's website, Johnson has said that his old assistant is the right man for the job, and is confident of his ability to take the club forward calling for fans to "rally behind him".

Keith Millen has already got his sights set on how he can do that: "Short term, we've got to get our strongest team out as possible and get some results. We've got plenty of games this season to see how far we can go. Obviously ideally our goal is to get to the Premier League, but at the moment we're taking it stage by stage."

He'll have to do it without Nicky Maynard who could be out for 3 to 4 months.

The 23 year old has been plagued with a knee problem throughout pre-season and underwent surgery on it on Wednesday.

The striker scored 21 goals for the Robins last season.

Keith said: "Disappointing for the lads and for the club. It could have been worse news, it could have been longer. The surgeon, having looked in the knee said it was the right decision and needed surgery. The work is done and he's confident it'll be successful."

The club is now gearing up for their game away at Doncaster tomorrow in the Championship.
