Council promises historic building will be saved.
Planned work to begin the full restoration of Cabot Tower will start today.
The grade 2 listed building has been closed to the public since 2007 following the discovery of complex structural problems.
Bristol City Council has been working with English Heritage because of its listed nature, and is awaiting final approval for a funding application to go towards the £400,000 costs. The council has also pledged £150,000 towards the work.
A specialist contractor will start work today carrying out detailed survey work on the viewing platforms investigating the iron work supporting them.
Simon Cook, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Capital Projects said: "The future of Cabot Tower has never been in doubt. It is a major landmark in Bristol and the council has always been clear from the outset that we want it re-opened for all to enjoy.
However because of its listed nature and the complexity of the structural problems, it has meant lengthy investigations and work with English Heritage to come up with a solution. We have to work with them
at every stage of the project."
