David Hempleman Adams and his co-pilot Simon Carey have been forced to pull out of the Gordon Bennet Gas Balloon race.
Their balloon was caught in strong winds and they have had to land above the Pyrenees, two days after starting the race in Switzerland.
They finished 8th out of 17.
Flight director Clive Bailey says the race is still going for several balloons, including one from America and one from Russia. "But the race is over for us. It's disappointing for us but it was a great flight.
"It was quite a difficult flight and you can always look back and say 'if only' but there were a few things we've learnt from it. If we'd just stayed that little bit higher for a little bit longer I think we'd have been okay and still flying today."
