Wednesday, August 25th 2010 00:00

An illicit alcohol still has been found in Iron Acton and now members of the public are urged to come forward if they've bought any unusually cheap vodka.

The discovery was made on Sunday when fire crews were called to a blaze at a remote shed in Iron Acton.

30 barrels of alcohol along with the still, bottling and labelling equipment were found.

Anyone who's bought bottles of Chekov Imperial Vodka and Chundoff Russian Vodka at an unusually low price is being urged to contact police.

Neighbourhood PC Ian Matthews said HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) are investigating the incident.

He said: "It seems that vodka was being illegally made and bottled at this site. Tests will be carried out by HMRC to check the alcohol content, but indications suggest it would be seriously harmful to health if drunk."

Lisa Billard of HM Revenue & Customs said: "HMRC officers, working with police, have removed an illicit still from the fire-damaged alcohol plant. The fraudsters behind this have not only evaded duty and produced fake 'UK excise duty paid' stamps, but the vodka has been manufactured illegally using a known brand name and without the usual health and safety checks.

"Our enquiries are continuing. Anyone with information about the manufacture of illegal alcohol should call the Customs hotline on 0800 595000."
