Residents in Keynsham have got the chance to air their views on a proposed new housing development in the town today.

Concerns have been raised over plans to redevelop an area of land at the top of Park Road after fears that animal carcasses contaminated with anthrax could have been discovered there.

Developers Taylor Wimpey want to build 285 homes, office spaces and shops in the area, but in a statement they've told us: "Taylor Wimpey is working in conjunction with Bath and North East Somerset and other agencies regarding this claim and has submitted a proposal for investigation works to be undertaken.

"We are currently awaiting approval of the proposals and agreement to proceed. Taylor Wimpey plans to re-develop the land for a mixed use development which will provide, amongst other elements, much need housing in the area, flexible office/ business accommodation, two local convenience shops and an extension of Castle Primary School.

"This investment in Keynsham will assist the local economy by providing much needed affordable housing for local families, employment opportunities and wider community benefits."

There are fears disturbing the land could unearth potential anthrax spores even after all these years, that could pose a health risk if proved.

Before their proposals are even considered the company has been ordered to carry out further tests to see if the site is safe.

Residents have also expressed concerns over proposed access roads and added pressure the development would put on the town's sewage system which they would need to be changed, causing even more disruption to the town.

Tonight's public meeting will be held in the Elim Church in Balmoral Road at 7pm.
