Friday, March 12th 2010 13:45

It has been confirmed the Government will not be looking into plans for Bristol City Football Club's proposed new stadium.

The Government office for the South West has said the Secretary of State will not intervene in Bristol City Council's decision over whether to grant planning permission for the football club's proposed new stadium at Ashton Vale.

The decision to grant planning permission will therefore remain with Bristol City Council, who have already said they are 'minded to approve' the application.  Planning permission for the new stadium will now be granted subject to the completion of a legal agreement over issues surrounding development costings.  The club have told us they hope to have those discussions resolved within the next month or so.

Bristol City FC Chief Executive, Colin Sexstone told us he is delighted to have reached this major milestone:  "This is great news and another major hurdle overcome.  The decision by the Secretary of State to let Bristol City Council determine the application is a significant step forward.

"It has been the culmination of nearly two years of hard work to bring the project to this stage.  Other important hurdles remain, and more hard work will be required from ourselves and other partners, but this is a huge milestone for us."

Mr Sextone says as well as being in talks with Bristol City Council, there are also ongoing discussions with North Somerset Council over the entrance to the proposed stadium.  They will decide issues surrounding roads and access to the site.  They club say they hope to have a decision from North Somerset at some point in May.

The club hopes to kick-off the 2012/13 season in their new stadium at Ashton Vale.
