A man is being questioned in connection with the murder of Melanie Hall after Avon and Somerset police made another arrest yesterday.
Officers have told us a 39 year old man from Wiltshire voluntarily handed himself in to an unnamed police station at about 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
He is now being questioned on suspicion of the murder of Melanie Hall who disappeared after a night out in Bath in 1996.
Det Chief Insp Gareth Bevan, of the murder inquiry team, described the arrest as an important step but stressed that the investigation is still ongoing.
He said: "Since Melanie's body was found last October, the investigation team has continued to work tirelessly, following up new information we have received and revisiting the previous investigations that followed Melanie's disappearance from Walcot Street in June 1996.
"An additional 250 statements have been taken and 1200 new tasks and investigative actions have been completed. This arrest was one such action.
He said that Melanie's parents, Pat and Steve Hall, are always kept informed and are aware that police have made an arrest.
Since the discovery of her remains near junction 14 of the M5 last October, this is the second arrest police have made.
In July, a 38 year old man was arrested but later released on police bail.
Det Chief Insp Bevan said: "The murder inquiry team remains active, positive and determined to find Melanie's killer or killers and bring them to justice.
"I repeat our appeal for anyone with information to contact the Murder Incident Room on 0117 9455811 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111."
