Driver escapes injury after transporting BBQ on his lorry in North Somerset.

A driver has escaped injury after transporting a LIT barbeque on the back of his open flat-bed truck, balanced next to a mattress in 24 degrees heat!

He was driving along Cuck Hill which runs between Shipham and Cheddar in North Somerset, when coals from the BBQ set the mattress alight. It burst into flames sending smoke billowing across the roads and nearby fields.

Alarmed motorists rushed to help as the driver leapt out and tried to pull the flaming mattress of the truck. They tried to put the flames out with fire extinguishers and water from their cars until the fire brigade arrived.

The driver said: "I thought it would've been ok to have a lit BBQ upright in the back of my truck and didn't think it would fall over."

One resident said: "The whole incident was madness; what was the driver thinking carrying a flaming BBQ on the back of an open truck? I was concerned that we wouldn't be able to pull the mattress off the back before it set alight to the petrol tanker and the whole truck could've exploded."

No-one was hurt in the incident which took place at 5.30pm on Sunday afternoon 20th June.
