Petition reaches 1000 signatures against Keynsham coal-search.

Campaigners against a firm planning to drill deep underground between Bristol and Bath say they've now got 1000 people supporting them.

A petition against UK Methane began because residents were concerned about the method of cracking the rock to test for coal reserves.

Laura Corfield from Transition Keynsham admits the company will follow the rules - but there's still a danger: "Accidents do happen, concrete does fail and casings do fail in these wells - as documented in cases around the world. Are we willing to take the risk and risk a leak happening - or would we rather it not happen in the first place?"

UK Methane says the work with a small test rig would initially last for three months of drilling - with a further 9 months of reporting.

The Transition Keynsham group meet tonight at 730pm (Tuesday 23rd Oct), Royal British Legion, just off the Keynsham High Street with a presentation and discussion afterwards.
