Monday, March 8th 2010 00:00

An investigation is underway after a fire at an historic house in Bristol yesterday.

The 4 storey property on Wilson Steet was once home to Elizabeth Blackwell - the first recognised female doctor in the US.

At about 4.40pm yesterday around 5 fire engines were called to the house just off Portland Square.

It's not thought anyone was injured in the blaze but the damage is said to be extensive.

Local eyewitness reports say the smoke engulfed the St James Barton roundabout.

Avon Fire and Rescue say they got about 40 999 calls from members of the public reporting the fire coming out of the building's roof.
