Olympic Torch Heads To The West

Find out everything you need to know about the Olympic torch coming through where you live and how best to view it.

This week the flame is being carried through the region after starting the relay at Land's End at the weekend.

During the 70 day tour, the torch will be carried by 8,000 torchbearers who each have a story of personal achievement or made a contribution to the local community.

It beings its journey through our region in Frome on Tuesday 22nd May, heads to Bath and then Bristol for the evening party in Millenium Square. The torch will then tour through the city on Wednesday 23rd May, head over the Clifton Suspension Bridge and out towards Chippenham.

Here are some top tips if you're planning on watching:

- Allow yourself time to park away from the route and walk to it

- Find a safe place to stand while you wait for the convoy to go by

- Remember that until the convoy passes, traffic will be travelling at normal speeds

- To get the best view, stand on the side of the road in the direction of travel of the relay

- Take your rubbish home or find a bin to put it in.

If you're not planning on watching the torch relay but use the route to travel to work, you may want to allow extra time for your journey, or think about finding an alternative route. Clifton suspension bridge will be closed on the day from 6am to 9am.

There will be rolling road closures to ease the torch's journey, avoiding the need for lengthy road closures. Roads will be closed for a few minutes at a time as the torch passes by.

Below is a more detailed breakdown of how your area could be effected by the torch relay:

Details for Bristol road closures:

The Clifton Suspension Bridge will be closed to vehicles from 6am to approx 9am. Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to cross but may experience some delay.

A small number of junctions will be manually controlled to ensure the Torch can pass without delay:

Portway and Bridge Valley Road

Blackboy Hill gyratory

Doncaster Road

Inbound traffic on the Portway will be affected for approximately 15 minutes at around 8am.

Parking restrictions will be in place along the route - please take notice of where cones have been placed:

Suspension Bridge Road

Clifton Down

Upper Belgrave Road

Henleaze Road

The Olympic Torch will be an escorted convoy - much like an abnormal load. Delays are expected on the route and on roads that lead to or cross the route. The route has to be clear to ensure that the convoy does not get delayed.

Where possible, alternatives should be taken well away from the Torch route.

All major junctions along the route will be giving priority to the Torch by way of a green light. This means that approximately five minutes before the arrival of the Torch at each junction, traffic will be held on the side roads and the main road given priority. It is likely traffic will be held for approximately 15 minutes. It is advised that unless you wish to spectate you avoid the area and seek alternative routes for your planned journeys.

Signs will be erected along the route two weeks before the arrival of the Torch advising motorists of restrictions and delays.

Somerset Torchbearer Sells It For £153,300

An Olympic torch has sold on eBay just one day after the first leg of the relay.

Sarah Milner Simonds, of Burnham-on-Sea, listed the item as being "used in the torch relay" and mentioned that it "may be soot marked from its moments alight".

The internet auction finished on Sunday and the winning bidder remains anonymous.

Ms Milner, who was also selling the torch bearer's uniform, is using the money for community gardening project The People's Plot.

There were also over 30 other auctions on the site for Olympic torches - many of which popped up following the sale.

One torch was going for £10,600 with 16 hours to run, and another had attracted a top bid of £4,100 with 14 hours left to bid.

One seller had put their torch up for sale with a starting bid of £100,000 but had received no offers.

The 8,000 torchbearers who were chosen to carry the Olympic flame on its journey across the UK were nominated to run a leg of the Olympic torch because they had done something brave or inspirational in their communities.

Organisers had previously said they would sell the Olympic torches at a loss to the bearers.

Family Rescued After West Blaze

Firefighters rescue children and pets from roof of house.

Three people were rescued from a flat roof by firefighters after a fire broke out at a house in Ashcombe Road in Weston-super-Mare.

Two fire engines from the town's fire station were sent to the scene after a blaze broke out in a ground floor flat of the converted property last night.

A woman managed to escape from the house, however three people in the flat above were trapped. With their normal escape route blocked, the three children aged 15, 14 and seven managed to flee onto a flat roof.

Fire crews were on scene within a few minutes of the call and used ladders to safely rescue all three along with three pets. The three children were all taken to hospital as a precaution.

It is believed to have started accidentally while the cylinder was being changed on a portable camping stove.

Bristol Boffin Appears At Ideas Festival

One the giants of modern physics is back in the city where he was educated.

The Life of Paul Dirac will be discussed by Peter Higgs and author of The Strangest Man: The Life of Paul Dirac, Graham Farmelo as part of the Bristol Ideas Festival at St. George's Bristol.

Two of the giants of modern physics were educated in Bristol’s schools. He will be talking about his mentor, Paul Dirac, who co-discovered quantum mechanics and predicted the existence of anti-matter, always regarded the excellent education he was given in Bristol – in physics, mathematics and engineering – as crucial to his career.

Dirac’s success inspired the young Peter Higgs, who attended Cotham School, and later predicted the particle now named after him and the subject of worldwide attention.

In the 1960s Peter Higgs put forward the idea of the existence of the Higgs boson particle – sometimes called the God particle – which might explain why particles have mass or energy.

The Large Hadron Collider in CERN is currently searching for this. Higgs was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, but grew up in Bristol where his father worked as a BBC sound engineer.

Higgs went to Cotham Grammar School where he was inspired by hearing the story of Paul Dirac to go into physics. In 1997 Higgs was awarded the Dirac Medal and Prize for outstanding contribution to theoretical physics by the Institute of Physics.

Much of his career was spent at the University of Edinburgh which he first joined in 1954. He retired in 1996, becoming Professor Emeritus.

Graham Farmelo is Senior Research Fellow at the Science Museum, London, and Adjunct Professor of Physics at Northeastern University, Boston, USA.

He edited the bestselling It Must be Beautiful: Great Equations of Modern Science in 2002. His biography of The Strangest Man: The Life of Paul Dirac, won the 2009 Costa Biography Prize and the 2010 Los Angeles Times Science Book Prize.

Bristol Stepbrothers Jailed For Rape

The men have been jailed indefinitely for attacking two women.

Neil Moore, 25 from Warmley and Barry Snook, 32, from St George, were found guilty at Bristol Crown Court of three counts each.

They also pleaded guilty to a separate offence of grooming a 15-year-old girl.

The pair was told they would serve a minimum of eight years in jail.

Detective Inspector Mike Buck, who leads Operation Bluestone, said: "The sentence given is down to the courage of the women who came forward to tell us what had happened to them. Their bravery in facing these men in court has led us to where we are today.

"These men preyed on vulnerable women and teamed up to commit the offences. They planned their attacks in the full belief that these vulnerable women would never be confident enough to come to us. Bristol is a safer place now these two men are behind bars."

Victims of rape and sexual assault can report to the police on 999 or 101 or they can seek help from The Bridge at www.turntothebridge.org or via Safe Link at www.safelinksupport.co.uk

Bristol Man Jailed For Wife's Murder

Peter Hicks has today been given a life sentence at Bristol Crown Court after pleading guilty to strangling his partner.

The 64-year-old called police on 15th November 2011, to say that he'd killed his wife Marlene at their home in Air Balloon Road in St George. He was arrested in the Devon and Cornwall Police area 2 hours later.

At Bristol Crown Court today, he was told he'll serve a minimum of 13 years.
Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Inspector Joe Goff said: "Last November Peter Hicks killed his wife and then abandoned her body in the house they shared, while he fled. He was swiftly arrested and now begins a long prison sentence.

"It is a horrific thing to take someone's life and I hope Hicks comes to fully realise the seriousness of his actions and the devastating heartache he has caused to Marlene's family. Nothing can bring Marlene back but I hope that the sentence today goes some way to help her family adjust to this terrible ordeal which has left them facing the future without a much-loved sister and aunt."
Alivia Harvey, Marlene's niece said: "The last six months have been very distressing and hearing the sentence today is realisation of how sadly Marlene's life was taken. We would like to thank the police for all their hard work and the support they have given us. Marlene will be remembered with fondness and love."

Green Light for Bristol Cancer Centre

New multi-million pound deal will also provide better children's facilities

An expansion of Bristol Cancer Centre has been given approval by University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust’s Board.

The £16 million redevelopment will enable the Trust to offer the very best in cancer care for the patients it treats and will deliver four major initiatives through a single development.

The expanded centre will enable the transfer of adult bone marrow transplant services out of the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children to the more appropriate adult setting in BHOC.

This move will make way for paediatric burns and neurosciences when they transfer from Frenchay Hospital in 2014. The scheme will also accommodate some therapeutic services which will transfer from the Southmead Hospital site.

The expansion will enable patients to have all of their care delivered in a single setting and deliver a much needed unit for teenagers and young adults with cancer, who will be able to have their unique needs catered for in an environment appropriate to their age.

The scheme will provide two replacement radiotherapy bunkers which will enable the Trust to provide the most advanced equipment available for local patients.

Amit Bahl is lead clinician for the BHOC, and welcomes the news: "This continued development of BHOC will ensure facilities that match the excellent standard of care provided to patients at the centre.”

Disappointment Over Referendum Turnout

Questions are being asked as to why so few people voted in Thursday's referendum on having an elected mayor.

Bristol is the only city out of 10 throughout the country that were asked if they wanted to change how their cities are run to vote 'yes' to bringing in an elected mayor.

But less than 1 in 4 people in Bristol took part in the vote.

A lack of clarity over what the vote would actually mean for the city has been given as a reason by some residents.

The council published leaflets to give us the information we needed but thousands didn't make it through our letter boxes.

We asked Returning Officer Steve MacNamara if using social media like Twitter or Facebook might be a better way to inform people: "I think that's a very interesting idea. We did send leaflets out to all households in Bristol but I understand that some people didn't receive them. Sometimes I think they were lost in things like pizza information."

Bristol Votes 'Yes' For A Mayor

Bristol has bucked the national trend and voted for an elected mayor.

The city voted 53 percent in favour - in contrast to Manchester, Nottingham, Bradford, Coventry and Sheffield which have rejected the proposals. Only a margin of 5,000 separated the two votes, however, with 41,032 people voting for a mayor against 36,880 voting to keep with the system Bristol already had.

There was a reported average 24 per cent turnout with the highest turnout in the Henleaze ward (34 per cent) and the lowest (10 per cent) in Filwood.

Stephen Perry from the Yes campaign said he was overwhelmed by the result. "I feel like crying, I really do. I honestly, honestly think this is probably the best day in Bristol politics in a lifetime. When I came here to the count this morning having heard the results of the four other cities being defeated and the national polling on this subject, it looked hopeless, I was absolutely convinced that we would lose.

"Now those of us who have been at the centre of our campaign will go our separate ways supporting different candidates. I know this result will divide views but I honestly think now we can unite again."

The public will now go to the polls on November 15th to vote for who they want to be their elected mayor.

But the ex Lord Mayor of Bristol, Alderman Bill Martin, says it's a sad day for Bristol. "We're going to have a city run by a celebrity rather than run by a political system. I think that's bad for Bristol. It's going to be a very expensive process and the tax payers of Bristol will pick up the bill.

"I feel sad for our Lord Mayor - we don't know what's going to happen to the role, status and function of our Lord Mayor. We've had Mayors and Lord Mayors for 800 years and all that tradition and all that history may well suffer because of the vote today."

Bristol City Council Pull Out Of Stadium Review

The council have decided they're not going to defend their decision to let a stadium be built on half the land at Ashton Vale.

It basically means we're back to square one with the development as another investigation will now take place to decide if the 42 acre site should be granted Town Green Status.

The first report confirmed the whole site should be protected but the council went against that advice and decided to grant half the site protection.

Despite this move to reach a compromise the landowners have since stated they're not willing to because of the continued legal wranglings.

The council say by pulling out of the judicial review they won't be spending more tax payers' money fighting the case and it should be resolved quicker.

In a statement released today by the council they said:

"Bristol City Council has today announced its intention to settle the current legal action in relation to Ashton Vale. The Council has been defending the decision last summer of its cross-party Public Rights of Way Committee against a Judicial Review lodged with the High Court, by an anonymous local person known as SDR and subsequently another anonymous person known as ABC. The committee decision being challenged was to refuse to register (approximately) half of the 42 acre site to the North, the committee having resolved to only register the southern half.

"Put briefly, the applicant has been seeking to have the High Court instruct the City Council to consider afresh the non-registration of the Northern part of the site as a Town or Village Green, by referring back evidence relating to this matter to an independent expert inspector to consider, and make recommendations accordingly to the council committee which will then decide the matter afresh. Finally, the applicant's case also presses the council to immediately register the narrow strip at the North-East side of the site as Town or Village Green land, without any further reference to the independent inspector, or to the council committee.

"The Council's decision today is to cease to contest the legal challenge, and therefore accept these outcomes should happen forthwith.

"The Council has made this decision so as to avoid further delays and to avoid mounting legal fees.

"Commenting on this decision, Councillor Peter Abraham (Conservative) who chairs the cross-party Public Rights of Way Committee said: "I have been saddened and frustrated that the decision of my cross-party committee of elected councillors has been challenged in a seemingly never-ending series of legal challenges. This is all the more disappointing as our decision preserved indefinitely 20 acres of land for local people to use as recreational open space, whilst leaving the other half of the land (including the former tip) free for development.

"Although a High Court Judge in an earlier hearing urged compromise, it is very disappointing that those concerned have preferred instead to run up ever-growing lawyers' bills - many of which will ultimately be carried by the tax-payer. I support this pragmatic decision today so as to begin to draw a line under this matter."

Sexstone: Stadium Oponents Are 'Selfish'

Colin Sexstone says some of the goings on regarding the stadium are nothing short of disgraceful and a few people should be hanging their heads in shame.

The club's Chairman announced this morning he's stepping down from the role at the end of the month.

Along with Steve Lansdown he's been the driving force behind getting a new stadium built but the decision has now been called in for a judicial review which will take place on June 14th.

"In a few weeks I won't be Chairman of Bristol City anymore and I'll probably say more at that point. Sadly, it's down to just a few people and a number of outside organisations who've lost Bristol the chance to have a new stadium.

It was going to be such a wonderful development opportunity but now that could be gone and that is so, so sad."

"The largest challenge was recreating him in a way that was sympathetic to him and represented him properly without making fun of him . It's very easy to make fun in animation but we wanted this to be a genuine representation of him and that was the biggest challenge for us."

Ex Bristol City Boss Confirmed As England Manager By FA

Roy Hodgson has been confirmed by the Football Association as the new England team manager.

A press conference at Wembley was told the 64-year-old had signed a four-year deal to take charge of the national team, taking him through to the end of Euro 2016.

FA bosses revealed they had decided on Hodgson around one month ago and made their approach after his West Bromwich Albion side drew against Aston Villa on Sunday - guaranteeing their Premier League survival.

And the new manager - who won the job ahead of favourite for the job, Harry Redknapp - said: "It is a very proud day for me, I'm a very happy man to be offered the chance to manage my country.

"I'm looking forward to the task ahead. Everyone knows it is not an easy one but I'm hoping that everyone, fans and supporters will get behind the team.

"It's the team that counts, they go out and win football matches."

Hodgson acknowledged he did not have much time to settle into the job before the European Championships, which start in June.

He said: "It's going to be difficult of course but hopefully I've got time.

"Obviously I've been working here for the last five years so the players are pretty well known to me even though I haven't worked with them all. I've done as much research and spoken to as many people as I can."

Hodgson revealed he had received a voicemail message from Redknapp after his imminent appointment was announced.

"I hope we remain friends," he said.

"I appreciate the fact he sent me a message."

And he said he had not made a decision on who would captain his team, but said he "looked forward" to Wayne Rooney taking part in Euro 2012 - despite the striker's suspension for the first two games of the tournament.

But Hodgson said he preferred not to talk about the tensions surrounding the potential selection of both John Terry and Rio Ferdinand.

A statement on the FA's website points to the eight league titles Hodgson has amassed during a career that has also featured stints in charge of the Switzerland, Finland and United Arab Emirates national teams.

He was briefly in charge of Bristol City in the early 80s after the Ashton Eight period when eight players took redundancy so the club could carry on going.

Major Success Against Car Thieves

New move to avoid car registration plates being stolen

Police in Bristol say they are delighted with the response to their calls for motorists to turn the screw on thieves who steal vehicle number plates.

Officers held three days of special events at supermarkets at Cribbs Causeway and Stoke Gifford last week offering to swap standard number plate fitting with security screws there and then.

More than 400 motorists visited the police stand and had their number plates secured for free.

PC Lorraine Welsh says the response from the public was fantastic: "We found that people were telling their friends about the scheme. We are so grateful to Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's for providing the venues but special thanks must go to the mechanics from Halfords Autocentres who came out despite the pouring rain to help us refit the number plates."

Thieves steal the number plates of law-abiding citizens and use them to try to avoid detection when committing other crimes, like getting petrol without paying to drug dealing.

Police in Gloucestershire are now thinking of extending the scheme there too.

New Clue In Rubery Murder

Police reveal shoeprint found outside pensioners Iron Action cottage could prove to be a major breakthrough.

Detectives investigating the murder of Barry Rubery are appealing to local communities for information two years on from his death.

Barry who was a father and grandfather was killed at Crossing Cottage on Latteridge Road in Iron Acton sometime overnight on April 28-29, 2010. He had returned to the property at around 10.45pm after attending a Masons' dinner at a lodge in the area.

After letting himself through the gate of his property he was attacked and as a result sustained significant injuries to his head.

Officers believe that those responsible may have been waiting for him as he never made it into his home.

Today on the second anniversary of Barry's death the officer leading the investigation has released an image of a footprint that was left at the scene. The sole of the shoe is likely to be from a trainer possibly of a Nike brand.

Detective Chief Inspector Mike Carter who is leading the investigation said: "Barry needlessly lost his life two years ago and I am determined to find those responsible for this violent crime.

"Having come onto the inquiry only a few months ago and having met Barry's family I can tell you that the grief they feel is as raw today as it was two years. They need to understand why their father and grandfather died at the hands of these people.

"We have a team of more than 20 people still working on this investigation; meticulously sifting through the hundreds of statements that were taken at the time and speaking again with those people who provided information.

"The investigation has highlighted that it was very rare that Barry's property was empty when he returned that night. His neighbour who lived on the grounds was not home, his friend had moved out days earlier and his partner had stayed at her own home. I believe someone knew Barry would be alone and that they would not be disturbed.

"This was a planned attack by a group of people and I would urge those people to think about their families and the life they lead. Your actions will catch up on you and your freedom could be taken away. If your allegiances have changed then you may be able to limit the impact on your life by coming forward and talking to us."

DCI Carter added: "We know that Barry had strong links with his local community and those involved in farming and agriculture and we believe someone within these communities may have that vital piece of information that could help solve this murder.

"Barry was a very private man however we know he was troubled and we are keen to hear from anyone who may have spoken with him in the days before his death. No matter how small you feel any piece of information may be please let us decide if it is relevant. Did he mention any recent business deals, issues with tenants, or even something personal?"

Speaking two years on his son and daughter Philip and Julie Rubery said: "It does not feel like two years has passed since Dad was murdered it still feels like this happened just yesterday.

"We try to move on but it's very hard not knowing why Dad was taken from us in such a violent and horrific way.

"We would ask anyone who may know something, anything that might help to come forward and speak with the police. Please help give us some closure."

Bristol City Council Leader Resigns

Councillor Barbara Janke has revealed that she's stepping down from the role and as the leader of the Liberal Democrat group.

Cabinet members were made aware of her decision this morning. She says she's decided to resign to 'allow the Liberal Democrats to choose a new leader who will take our cause to the voters in elections over the coming months and years.'

Councillor Janke will remain leader of the Lib Dem group until Tuesday, May 8th when they hold their annual meeting.

A successor will be chosen that night and will be the party's candidate for leadership of Bristol City Council at its annual meeting on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 15th.

In a statement, she said: "I have been Bristol Lib Dem leader - apart from 2007-8 - since 1997. I am enormously proud of the Liberal Democrats' achievements here since then, growing from just a handful of members to become the largest party on the council, with a majority for two years.

"Despite the propaganda of Lords Adonis and Heseltine and other proponents of elected mayors, there have actually been few changes of council administration in Bristol over the last few years and for much of the period since 2003 we have led the council.

"We have achieved a great deal. Bristol, under our leadership, has become a greener, more creative and more prosperous city - led by a council which is leaner and more responsive to the needs of our communities.

"Bristol is unique: as dynamic as it is beautiful. It has been an enormous privilege for me to serve as a city councillor since 1995 and as Leader of the Council 2003-4, 2005-7 and, again, since 2009.

"There have been, under the Lib Dems, huge efforts to change attitudes and reorganise the way the council works - successes that are a reflection, too, of Jan Ormondroyd's contribution as chief executive here over the last few years. I would like to offer her my particular thanks for her immense professionalism and support to me as Leader.

"Across the council, officers and other staff have also worked enormously hard to help turn round what was once a failing authority but is now greatly changed and focused on the public we serve.

"There are too many to thank individually, but over the next few days I hope to write to some of those I have worked particularly closely with.

"This will include, for instance, the team that has worked on our two bids to become the first UK city to win the European Green Capital award.

"If in June the judges make the award to Bristol, it will be a great accolade for our city and I will be very proud of our team, led by officers brought together by this administration.

"I have decided to stand down this year to allow the Liberal Democrats to choose a new leader who will take our cause to the voters in elections over the coming months and years."

Anger Over Cancellation Of St Pauls Carnival

The news hasn't gone down well with some local businesses.

Organisers made the announcement yesterday and say it's down to concerns about not being able to cover health and safety issues.

The event attracted 100,000 people last year alone and is a valuable source of income for several businesses in the area

Jo Drury is the owner of Cosies Wine bar in Portland Square. She said: "It's going to be a bad year for everyone I think. On the business side of things obviously we'll lose the revenue but the community will lose a massive part of what is the carnival and what it means to those in St Pauls and it seems that it's a rather drastic decision."

Despite the large crowds last year, fundraising results were very poor and this summer's event was going to be scaled back before the decision was made to cancel it completely.

Jo said she recognises the hard work of the committee who organise it, but feels more could have been done to save it: "Unfortunately I think they slipped up on the communication side. They could have done more in the early stages to actually raise the public's awareness of how short of funding they were.

"Unfortunately they're a victim of their own success. Carnival has got bigger and bigger each year and now they're struggling to keep up with the health and safety implications of it."

The carnival board say they will now concentrate their efforts on next year's parade.

Council Leader Raises Concerns Over Quarry Use

The leader of Bristol City Council has questioned Bath and North East Somerset Council (BANES) over plans to dump asbestos in a quarry.

Councillor Barbara Janke has written to BANES which is currently considering whether to allow hazardous waste and possibly asbestos to be dumped at Stowey Quarry in Chew Valley.

Concerns were raised during a consultation of Bristol residents, as the region's main drinking water reservoir is below the site.

Councillor Janke is urging the authority to consider these comments before taking any action.

The letter stated: "Some residents have expressed the view that the possibility of toxic asbestos being accidentally or unscrupulously disposed of on the Stowey Quarry site poses a potentially devastating risk to public health in Bristol. What safeguards will be put in place to mitigate against this possibility?"

Bristol Water has also stated they think it would be 'inappropriate' to use the quarry to dump waste because of its proximity to Chew Valley Lake.

A final decision on the proposal isn't expected until after 6th June.

Ashton Vale Judicial Review Set For June

The legal challenge over the Aston Vale stadium development will take place in June.

Bristol City Football Club already have planning permission to build their new 30,000 seater stadium at Ashton Vale but they're unable to move forward with their plans because some local residents are calling for the land to be protected from any development.

They want the 42 acre site to be give Town and Village Green status and an independent inspector agreed with them

Despite this Bristol City Council ruled that the land could be shared, creating both a town green and the stadium.

It's how that decision was made that is being challenged.

The case will be heard on 14th June at the High Court.

St Pauls Carnival Cancelled

Organisers have pulled the plug on the famous event for this year which attracted 100,000 people to the city last year.

In a statement on their website they say they've 'reluctantly taken the decision to cancel because of 'uncertainties over the safety of participants and spectators'

Earlier this year it was revealed that because of poor fundraising results at last year's parade they were planning to scale the event back this year but has now dropped it completely.

Efforts will now be made to make sure the carnival can return properly for 2013.

Following today's announcement Councillor Simon Cook, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Capital Projects and ward councillors for Ashley Dr Jon Rogers and Gus Hoyt released this joint statement:

"Bristol City Council is of course sad to hear the Carnival Committee's decision that the 2012 St Pauls Carnival will be cancelled. We remain though fully committed to supporting Carnival, and look forward to it bouncing back bigger and better in 2013 - as it did after earlier cancellations in 2002 and 2006.

"As a concrete sign of our commitment, the City Council will continue to invest our £55,000 grant this year, so that the Carnival Committee can carry on work over the coming months to build a bigger, better and financially-sustainable Carnival for 2013 onwards. We understand that the Arts Council will be prepared to leave its funding in place on the same basis.

"Of course, as guardians of tax payers' money, we'll be agreeing a detailed plan with the Carnival Committee over coming weeks, with the

solid milestones we shall be expecting them to achieve over coming months, particularly in terms of community fund-raising, before unlocking future elements of our grant funding. We'll also be expecting the Carnival Committee to take part in community cohesion work, to bring together the whole community behind Carnival, which is such an integral, and well-loved part of life in St Pauls and Bristol generally. Now is a time for everyone who loves Carnival to unite, and work together for a brilliant event in 2013."

Student Satisfaction On The Up In Bristol

Both of Bristol's universities have done well in this year's Complete University Guide.

The publication ranks all 116 universities in the country based on the satisfaction of their students, and the quality of courses on offer.

The University of Bristol was placed at number 11, the same as last year.

David Alder said they were pleased to maintain a good result: "Whilst it's great that we are in that place in the table and we've very pleased about that, our focus remains to have the most high achieving students we can and continuing to carry out world leading research."

Over at the University of the West of England, they've jumped three places up the table, to number 59.

It's something they've been working hard for, according to Keith Higgs: "Again we're making progress in terms of the reputation of the university and how it's seen. The good thing about the Complete University Guide is that it covers a number of key areas and it's well respected."

The University of Bath came in at number 10 with Cambridge, The London School of Economics and Political Science and Oxford taking the top three spots.

Zoo hosts new project aimed at educating us to animals facing extinction.

Bristol Zoo Gardens has revealed the DinoZoo this morning and it will be on display at the attraction from next month.

For three months, 12 huge animatronic dinosaurs will be placed around the Zoo.

The new residents will include some of the world's most popular dinosaur species, such as the tyrannosaurus rex, triceratops and the long-necked brachiosaurus, all of which will be brought to life using mechanical technology and animatronics.

Dr Bryan Carroll director of Bristol Zoo, said: "We are always looking for new and exciting ways to entertain, inspire and educate our guests, and this year is no exception. DinoZoo is sure to be a fantastically popular new attraction that will take our guests on a journey that started over 200 million years ago.

"We are really looking forward to unveiling these giant creatures on May 25. It also presents a great opportunity to tell our guests about the very real extinction threat facing many species in the Zoo and around the world."

SAVED!

Remarkable end of season run saves Bristol City from the drop.

Derek McInnes described his sides successful pursuit of salvation as a "huge relief".

City's 2 - 0 win over Barnsley in front of over 18,000 home fans at Ashton Gate extended their unbeaten run to seven matches securing another season in the Championship with a game to spare.

Derek said: "When you see what the club means to so many people, we're just delighted we managed to send the support home so happy."

"This club has got a lot of work to do and we've got to attack that head on. If we think we're going to settle for this each and every season, I don't want to be part of it.

"It hasn't been enjoyable, but what has been encouraging has been the response of the players. They've been terrific, every one of them."

North Somerset Woman Runs Marathon for Mum

Mother was diagnosed with dementia in her 50's and passed away in January.

A woman has been speaking out about the devestating effect of dementia after her mother was struck down with the illness almost ten years ago.

Kate Jones gave up her career to care for her mum, Ruth Thurling, five years ago and the 66 year old died in January this year.

Kate decided to take up running only a few months ago and was lucky to get a ballot place in this year's London Marathon.

Kate from Shipham told us: "Very sadly, around 10 years ago my Mum started to show the very early signs of dementia, at that time she was in her 50's.

Over those 10 years my family and I had to watch, helpless, as this cruel and dreadful disease stripped her of everything and she finally passed away in January.

It was such and awful time for me, my dad and brother, all the family and mum's friends. There should be more money put into finding a cure for this appalling illness.

Those last six miles of the marathon are a killer but I know the support of my family and friends, the crowd and all the adrenaline will get me over the line."

'Unique' Play Voices Bristol's Silent Domestic Violence

Only one third of domestic violence incidents that happen every year in Bristol are thought to be reported to the police - but the true figure could be close to 25,000 incidents a year.

Tonight a new play from the Common Wealth Theatre Company seeks to show how violence can build up in ordinary homes.

'Our Glass House' uses a Bristol council house as its stage and is a chilling reminder of how domestic abuse can build up behind the four walls of an ordinary house.

Creative Director Rhiannon White said the issue is very close to her heart. "I went to the refuge when I was six with my mum. When we left my dad, she got into another relationship with a man until I was about 20. He was also a very controlling man - I wouldn't say violent but it was very abusive. And personally I was in a violent relationship for a year and a half until I managed to get the courage to escape - so the play is coming from a very real place."

Her colleague Evie Manning came up with the idea to perform the play in a house after discovering that her next-door neighbour had been abused by her husband for five years before anyone realised. "It showed what could be hidden behind walls and we wanted to open the house up to show that anybody could be the victim of abuse," said Ms White.

Ms Manning said: "We have been shocked by figures recently released that already 40 women have died as a result of domestic violence in 2012. We strongly believe that this is a direct consequence of government cuts that are widely acknowledged to hit women the hardest and hope that this production gets people thinking about the valuable life-saving services that are under threat."

One in four women in the UK will experience domestic violence and abuse in their lifetime and between 100 and 150 women are murdered each year by their current or ex male partner.

Domestic abuse includes any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) between partners or family members.

'Our Glass House' will be performed from Wednesday 18th April to Sunday 29th April at 90 Hudds Vale Road, St George, Bristol, BS5 7HN.

Tickets are £10 for adults, £5 for concessions and can be booked online or from the Tobacco Factory Theatre by calling the Box Office on 0117 9020 344, booking online at www.tobaccofactorytheatre.com or going to the Box Office in person.
Investigations Continue Into Fatal Boat Fire

Police are still investigating a blaze on a cabin cruiser which left one man from Swindon dead and another in hospital with serious burns.

Emergency services were called out at around 6.20am yesterday morning to find the fire on a boat which was moored close to Pulteney Bridge, on the Riverside Walk opposite Parade Gardens.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service said one Swindon man in his 40s had died at the scene and the other, a man in his 30s, is being treated at Frenchay hospital for burns and the effects of smoke.

The case has now been referred to the coroner and police are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire, although they have said they are not treating it as suspicious.

Bomb Man Jailed

A man has been sentenced for making explosives in a shed at his Burnham-on-Sea home.

Phillip Leonard, aged 35, pleaded guilty to four counts of making explosives when he appeared at Taunton Crown Court.

On Friday, he returned to the court and was sentenced to two years in prison for each offence to be served concurrently.

It followed an incident in Beatty Way on 20th January, where the Explosives Ordnance Disposal team attended the address and removed some items for safe disposal.

Phillip Leonard was arrested at the property and was later charged.

At the time, a 100m cordon was set up covering almost a hundred homes, around 30 people were evacuated to a nearby rest centre and were only able to return to their homes at 10pm when the cordon was removed.

Speaking after the court case, Chief Superintendent Daimon Tilley said: "This was a serious incident which caused significant disruption to the local community.

While there was no malicious intent in Leonard's actions he must accept that he put the safety of his own family, his neighbours and the responding public services at risk and caused local residents to leave their homes for more than twelve hours.

"Since this incident we have had to issue another warrant under the Explosives Act in connection with a separate investigation in Taunton.

People need to realise that chemicals are dangerous and are not simply something which can be played with out of boredom, curiosity or even worse with the intent to cause harm to others.

Public safety will always be our main concern and we will put in place an appropriate response.

This inevitably causes disruption to the community and ties up valuable police resources.

"I hope that the police response on this occasion shows we take incidents such as these seriously and deters others from experimenting with dangerous substances."

GCCC Release Finances For Season

Sri Lanka crowd helps keep cricket club in the black.

Gloucestershire County Cricket Club has announced its results for the 16 month period from 1 October 2010 to 31 January 2012.

In the 12 months to 30 September the club made a small surplus of £3k. The club released a statement to say: "This was an excellent result after pre tax deficits in the previous 2 years of £244k and £182k.

The major differences from the 2010 season were firstly on gate receipts, which increased by £79k, helped by a record Cheltenham and secondly a reduction in squad costs of £136k which was necessary in order for us to set a balanced budget.

Financially we had a better international match with Sri Lanka bringing in a larger crowd than the previous year, even if the result on the field, from an England perspective, was again disappointing.

During the year the club moved its financial year end from 30 September to 31 January. The four month period from 1 October to 31 January is one where income is limited but expenditure is ongoing.

As a result it was always going to produce a considerable deficit; this highlights the seasonal nature of our income streams and is no different to previous years over these four months. However, it is more visible this year due to the change in financial year end. The one-off deficit for this 4 month period was £556k, meaning a total deficit for the 16 month period of £553k.

Tony Elgood, Honorary Treasurer added: "The turnaround from a deficit of almost £1/4m to a small surplus is excellent news and we are forecasting a significant surplus for the current year.

We took some tough decisions and competed in 2011 with a significantly younger squad. We were, nevertheless, contenders for promotion in the Championship right up to the last game.

Our ground development plans have continued apace and we hope to have an outcome on the latest planning application on 30 May. The scheme is vital for us to develop as a club as well as retaining international cricket in Bristol."

What Recession?! Says North Somerset Entrepreneurs

Owners buck the economic trend by setting up three independent shops in just one week to transform village near Bristol.

Several enterprising women have set up their own businesses in a village near Bristol.

Winscombe has struggled for the past few years, with some shops closing down because of the economic climate. The Co-Op supermarket was also badly damaged by fire last year and it took several months before it was reopen again.

Now, locals and visitors have seen not one, but three independent shops springing up over the last seven days including a wedding dress boutique, a woman's clothing and accessory shop and a beauty salon.

Brenda Ashford is the owner of Cleopatra's Wardrobe and told us: "I am a positive thinking person and I just think there is enough doom and gloom around and we need something to cheer ourselves up! Locals love it; they think it's fantastic that people have taken the initiative to do something about it.

I don't go with the media hype, everyone has a small amount of cash to spend to make themselves feel better. And there's nothing wrong with window shopping as well!

We have had a lot of problems over the years with the road closure and the supermarket fire and it nearly killed the village.

This is just what is needed and the Parish Council is delighted."

Alice Hiscox, 23, runs V and A Beauty with her business partner Vicky McNally, 22.

Alice added: "We thought it was a great opportunity, it's a lively village and the perfect location. Everyone just wants to feel good. That's why we knew V and A would work. You just need determination and imagination. We have nothing to lose so you just have to go for it.

Locals have been really supportive as no-one likes seeing empty shops around."

Bike Arrests In Bristol

Investigation centered on gangs following mountain bikers home from Ashton Court and Leigh Woods.

Five people have now been arrrested after a police investigation in the city.

PC Greig Difford said: "There were 28 such incidents in March 2012, where bicycles have been taken from homes in Bristol. The owners of these bikes had been cycling in the Leigh Woods or Ashton Court area in the weeks leading up to the theft.

"Leigh Woods and Ashton Court now attracts many cyclists as it was voted the 'best inner city mountain bike trail in the country' and we are keen to put a stop to these thefts and bring the offenders to justice.

"Some of the bikes stolen have been worth up to £5,000 and we have increased patrols in the area. I would ask anyone who notices suspicious behaviour to call us on the new non-emergency police telephone number 101."

Four people aged 20, 19, 19 and 17 have been arrested on suspicion of burglary and are currently on police bail pending further enquiries.

Bristol Burglar Jailed

Criminal given jail term after admitting over 50 offences across the West.

39-year-old Jason Reed was originally going to be tried at Bristol Crown Court for two offences. A burglary from a house in Clifton, Bristol in November 2011 as well as a theft from another property in the same area later that month.

But while he was awaiting trial, Mr Reed also admitted he had committed a further 49 burglaries between 2008 and 2011. He asked the court to take these crimes into consideration at his trial.

DC Alistair Binnie said: "I worked with Jason to persuade him that coming clean and paying his dues was the best way for him to move on with his life."

"Admitting what he's done not only means that he won't have old crimes coming back to haunt him once he's served his time but also shows remorse and gives his victims the closure they deserve".

The burglar admitted to crimes from all over the Avon and Somerset force area including; Bristol, South Gloucestershire, BANES and North Somerset.

Reed was spared jail last year after being given a suspended sentence, and went on to commit more break-ins.

Girl Found After Major Seaside Search

Autistic teenager found safe and well after huge search by emergency services on Brean beach.

Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards, rescue hovercrafts and police launched a major search for a missing autistic teenager in thick fog on Brean beach this afternoon.

The carers of the 14 year-old contacted Brean's beachwarden at 1.45pm to report the girl missing after she was last seen leaving the Brean Cove Cafe.

With visibility down to just 70 metres because of coastal fog, teams of coastguards and the hovercraft searched the area, including on foot.

After going missing for 90-minutes, the girl was eventually found safe and well - but in a shaken state - on the beach towards Berrow.

The carer of the girl, Jason Allen, said: "I can't thank the rescue teams enough for their help. I was really panicking and starting to think the worst. The quick response from over 20 people was fantastic."

Burnham Coastguard Officer Steve Bird added: "We are very happy that the girl was found safe and well. She was in a potentially dangerous situation given the terrible visibility, which was down to 60 metres at times. This made co-ordinating the search very difficult and we were grateful to have the extra assistance of BARB's crew and hovercraft. A helicopter could not fly into the area due to the thick fog."

The girl was visiting Brean beach on a day trip with friends from an autistic school in Gloucestershire.

Peter Rowell Sentenced To 6 Years

The former TV and radio presenter has been jailed at Bristol Crown court today for sex offences on 5 teenage girls in the 1990s and will remain on the sex offenders register for life.

The 53 year old, who worked at BBC Radio Bristol, HTV and GWR pleaded guilty in January to the series of indecent assaults as well as posessing and making indecent images of children.

Rowell, from Wickwar, went missing last year after he failed to turn up to present his radio show at the BBC. Avon and Somerset police launched a nationwide manhunt for his after his car was found at a supermarket car park.

He was later found in Cumbria and arrested.

After a spell in the Priory Hospital Rowell was later charged with the offences. In January he pleaded guity to the charges.

They all relate to a period of time he was working at GWR in Bristol in the early 90s while Rowell was in his 30s.

Today, the court heard how all the girls who were assaulted approached the radio station. Rowell then exploited that contact and would make explicit phone calls to them. As the relationships developed he would do things like invite them to the station, to GWR roadshows and pick them up from school in his company car.

The court was also told how he was aware how impressionable young girls aged between 13 and 15 years old were and what impact this could have on naive, vulnerable girls.

One victim later went on to say the reason she didn't come forward earlier was because of her sense of embarassment about that naivity.

The court heard how Rowell was making indecent images on his computer right up until his arrest in January 2011.

In sentencing, the judge read out a number of comments from letters written by former colleagues including representatives from HTV and various radio groups outlining his good character.

And there was also a letter from Marie Curie cancer care - one of the organisations he'd worked with over the years where he'd helped raise over a million pounds for charities.

In sentencing, the judge ruled Rowell - who while being held at Gloucestershire prison had already been helping at the institution by getting a cleaning job 6 days a week, helping illiterate prisoners with reading and taking part in a mentoring scheme. The judge said if he continued in this way, he could be released from prison in 3 years.

A Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) was also issued to Rowell with the following conditions:

1. You may not live with or otherwise cohabit with any girl who you reasonably believe to be under the age of 16. This does not apply to

immediate members of your family.

2. You are prohibited from engaging in any unsupervised contact with any girl who you reasonably believe to be under the age of 16. This

does not apply where the meeting is unsolicited, is of less than five minutes duration and is not repeated.

3. You may not join or participate in any charitable or voluntary organisation concerned with the welfare, entertainment or education

of any girl under the age of 16.

West Country Protesters Face Eviction

Anti-nuclear activists camped out on farm in Somerset told to leave site by High Court judge.

The activists were in the High Court in London earlier today when proposed legal action against them was taken by EDF Energy.

The
French company wanted to evict campaigners who are currently camped out
on a farm near Bridgwater where the Hinkley Point C reactor could be
built.

The judge granted a possession order to EDF to reclaim
Langborough Farm, a deserted building on the proposed site
which has been occupied by protesters for the past two weeks.

In a statement to the court Crispin Aubrey said earlier: "We defend
our right to free speech and the right to protest at actions which we
consider promote an energy source which is hazardous to the local
population and environment, uneconomic and not needed.

We feel
EDF's attempt to seek an injunction against us is ill-conceived and
intended to intimidate us from acting in a way that is contrary to their
interests."

In a statement, the Stop Hinkley group says "EDF was
aiming to ban Stop Hinkley not only from entering its land at Hinkley
Point, where it wants to build two giant nuclear reactors on the
Somerset coast, but from encouraging anybody else to do so.

The
injunction was rejected by the Judge on the basis that there was no
evidence that the campaign and other organisations intended to encourage
illegal activity."

Protester Theo Simon told the court that
their action was against the threat by EDF to start major construction
work even before they have received consent from the Infrastructure
Planning Commission. He added that there were bats hibernating in the
barn, which is due to be demolished under EDF's plans.

Bristol MP Calls Food Waste "Obscene"

Kerry McCarthy wants more to be donated to homeless charities.

Supermarkets and food manufacturers who throw away huge amounts of good quality edible food every day should donate it to charities for the hungry and homeless instead, according to the MP.

Ms McCarthy is planning to bring foward a Bill in Parliament on 14th March to tackle the problem of food waste. She met with Project Director for FareShare South West, Jacqui Reeves, to hear about its work and what can be done to get supermarkets and manufacturers to donate more of their surplus food.

Jacqui said: "The food industry is responsible for 3 million tonnes of food waste per annum. There are about 4.2 million people live in poverty and we know that these figures are only going to rise over the next years.

It’s hard to find how much of this 3 million tonnes is still in-life. For argument sake if only 1% of the 3 million tonnes of food is edible and given to FareShare it would be equivalent to 70 million meals. Last year we distributed only 8.6 million meals.”

The aim of Kerry’s proposed bill is to ensure that a greater proportion of the obscene amounts of food needlessly wasted by supermarkets across the food chain is donated to charities which redistribute it to the increasing number of people living in food poverty in the UK.

Visiting the Southwest branch of Fairshare in Bristol, Kerry said:

"Each year supermarkets are throwing away tonnes of edible food.

This is massively wasteful, bad for the environment, and is happening at a time when an estimated 26,500 people in Bristol are having to go hungry because of financial hardship.

Organisations such as FareShare are trying to put food that would otherwise be wasted to better use, to help the most vulnerable people in our communities.

They do great job and I want to encourage more supermarkets and manufacturers to support their work, which would help them to minimise their food waste and disposal costs (and to avoid landfill tax) and to become more closely involved in their local community”.

Jobs Boost For West Country Attraction

£2 million pound expansion plan get the green light for Puxton Park.

A 2 million pound extension at Puxton Park providing 40 jobs in a new state of the art garden centre have been backed by the Parish Council.

The family run visitor attraction submitted plans to North Somerset Council last November, for a 2,000 square metre extension to existing farm shop and restaurant.

Managing Director Alistair Mead says the extension will provide a new state-of-the-art garden centre, larger restaurant and external display area for plants.

The proposal will also provide around 40 new jobs for local people, which Mr Mead says is a positive contribution to the economy in the current challenging times.

Parish council chairman, Andy McKenzie said: "Our point of view is that Puxton is a well-run and managed business and

the garden centre will bring employment into the community, which can only be a good thing.

"The plans are sensible and sensitive and everything they have done in the past has been to a high standard, so we are sure they will do a good job."

Rugby Stars Gather For Injured Player

Some of the West’s top Rugby stars raise money for Lee Audis.

Lee was seriously injured in a road accident in December in Doncaster, where he was beginning to make a name for himself as scrum-half for Doncaster Knights.

His close friend, Jack Burns from Bath, elder brother of Gloucester and England rugby star, Freddie, is organising a fund raising afternoon based around a game of touch rugby between the ‘Lee Audis All Stars’ and the ‘Bath Rugby All Stars’.

Amongst the many Bath and Gloucester players expected to attend will be Freddie Burns and his newly signed younger brother Billy, Dave Lewis and Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu from Gloucester and from Bath, Olly Barkley, Mark Lilley, Josh Ovens and Matt Banahan.

Jack said, "What struck me and my brothers and our friends who know Lee is the impact his accident has had on the family.

Until recently he was in hospital in Leeds, with the family having to travel to and from there, with hotel bills and so on.

We need to raise money to help them and also for Lee’s rehabilitation.

He is showing some small signs of coming out of the coma and the best result we could have is for him to come around by the time of the event.”

After the match will be an auction and a kit sale, with many of the items donated by the players and other local business’s.

The match kicks off at 1:00 pm.

Bristol Kids Get Law Lessons

Primary school the first in the region to get taught the consequences of breaking the law.

St Joseph's School in Portishead has become one of the first in Avon and Somerset to receive lessons from Police about the consequences of breaking the law.

The lessons have been created to teach young people about 'crime and its consequences' and are being rolled out to ten and eleven-year-olds at primary schools across Avon and Somerset in the coming months.

Superintendent Julian Moss - District Commander for North Somerset said:

"This is a great learning package and we are really pleased that St Joseph's has become one of the first in Avon and Somerset to introduce it."

"We hope it will reduce the chances of pupils becoming a victim of crime – or even committing a crime themselves."

During the sessions children discuss issues such as peer-pressure, truancy and personal safety, and learn how the youth justice system works.

Inspector Kerry Paterson said: "This is a really great opportunity to speak to children before they start secondary school, to make sure they understand the long-term consequences of criminal behaviour.

"Ten years is the age of 'criminal responsibility' and having a criminal record can affect your future job prospects and prevent you from entering some other countries."

The lessons, delivered by local police officers and PCSOs, will also ensure that children know the support networks available if they ever do have concerns or become a victim of crime.

Inspector Paterson added: "The majority of young people are law-abiding citizens, and this will also provide them with the tools they need to make the right choices and feel confident to say no."

Fire At Weston School

Pupils evacutaed after blaze at the Hans Price Academy.

Pupils are back in school this afternoon after a fire at the Hans Price Academy in Weston.

It broke out earlier this morning in the school in Marchfields Way.

Three fire engines attended the scene of the blaze which was said to be accidental and no-one was injured.

The school remains open and lessons are continuing.

The school has issued a statement to say:

"This morning the extractor fan in our technology store room caused a spark which set alight some dust, spreading to some timber. The fire services were called and the fire quickly put out.

We had to evacuate the building as is practice when the alarm goes off and all the staff and students had to wait on the astro-turf at the front of the school for 45minutes. We can’t praise the students enough for their conduct throughout, which was exemplary.

No rooms are out of action and lessons resumed as normal after break."

Another Delay For BCFC?

Plans for new stadium in Bristol thrown into doubt once again.

Once again, the future of Bristol City's new stadium is under the spotlight.

A second judicial review into the decision to let half of Ashton Vale be developed has been granted by the High Court.

This comes after the first complaint was withdrawn earlier this week.

A Bristol City Council spokesman said:

"Clearly this astonishing turn of events is deeply frustrating. Our legal representatives were not invited to be present, or even made aware, that the courts were due to make this decision yesterday on a new judicial review by another anonymous person. We shall be seeking to reverse this decision in the strongest terms next week when it is reviewed by the courts."

Bristol City Football Club have released a statement to say:

"The club is aware of recent and on-going developments in claims to challenge Bristol City Council's decision to register land at Ashton Vale as a Town and Village Green.

This is a complex legal case between an individual claimant, Bristol City Council and the landowners. Bristol City Football Club is not a party to this legal process, although we clearly have a huge interest in the outcome.

Bristol City Football Club will make no further comment on this matter for the time being."

City Breaks For Bristol Holiday Makers

Bristol Airport reports a surge in bookings for city breaks because of mild winter.

The mild weather in December and January has led to more Bristol holiday makers to opt for sightseeking city breaks and ski holidays this half term, rather than a beach holiday in the sun.

Ali Gayward, easyJet’s UK Commercial Manager, said:

"February is a great time for exploring some of Europe’s most exciting cities and the mild weather throughout the majority of winter has definitely left people with less of a longing to head straight for traditional beach destinations and more of an inclination to satisfy their wanderlust.”

March Against Bristol Ice Rink Closure

Thousands have now signed petition to keep the rink open.

The ice rink has been going for 45 years, but is now set to be turned into student flats.

The lease runs out next year and the property’s owner, Unite have decided not to renew the lease.

Unite say they’ve decided to redevelop the building into student flats.

There are worries about what that will mean for the ice hockey team though who since re-forming in 2009 have now 4 teams.

An online petition has already attracted more than 3,700 signatures and an official petition has been lodged with the council.

Today, protesters against the closure will be marching from the rink to Cabot Circus with leaflets highlighting why the rink should remain in the city.

Firefighters Praise Bristol Dog Owner

Animal rescued from lake after owner calls 999.

Avon Fire and Rescue have praised a Bristol woman for calling 999 when her dog became trapped in a frozen lake, instead of trying to rescue him herself.

When crews arrived at the water in Wharf Lane in Portbury, they found Clifford the Collie/Jack Russell cross, in the middle of the lake treading water.

It’s thought he had been there for around 45 minutes in around 4ft of water.

Firefighters wearing dry suits broke the ice on the lake and waded into the water with their rescue sled. When they reached the animal they assisted it on to the sled and brought it to safety. It was then reunited with its owner and appeared to be unharmed.

Fire spokeswoman Stephanie Mounsey said: "Avon Fire & Rescue Service would like to praise the actions of the owner who did not attempt to rescue the dog and risk falling through the ice. Instead she dialled 999 and asked for the fire and rescue service.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service would like to remind people of the dangers of frozen lakes and ponds. As the winter weather takes hold the service is urging people to take care when out and about.

Fortunately in this case the dog and the owner were unharmed but had the owner entered the water it may have been a different story.

While the ice may appear to look thick and able to take your weight, that may not be the case and just a few seconds in freezing water could quickly lead to hypothermia and unconsciousness."

Bill Actor Found Dead In Bristol

Colin Tarrant thought to have committed suicide at his home in the city.

One of the stars of The Bill has been found dead.

Colin Tarrant played Inspector Andrew Monroe in the ITV police drama for more than a decade.

Reports in today's papers say his son discovered the 59-year-old's body with a number of knife injuries at his home in Bristol.

No details of his death were given, but the People reported the actor died in a suspected suicide and was found at his home in Bristol with knife wounds.

Tarrant, 59, had performed in a number of stage shows since leaving the long-running ITV police drama, which was axed in 2010.

A statement released on behalf of his family said he died suddenly at Bristol Royal Infirmary on Thursday.

It added: "Colin was best known as Inspector Andrew Monroe in the television series The Bill, a part he played very happily for many years.

"Since leaving the series he has triumphed on stage as Brian Clough in The Spirit Of The Man and had recently played John in the enormously successful stage production of Calendar Girls, and to which he would have returned this autumn."

West End theatre producer David Pugh added: "Colin was a lovely man, he loved the theatre, his politics and his family, our hearts must go out to his son Juma, his partner Sabrina and their baby son Louis."

The Bill, set in the fictional London area of Sun Hill, was launched as a series in 1984 and ran for 26 years.

Despite having a cult following, audience numbers fell in later years and it was eventually axed after 2,400 episodes

Bristol DJ Cheats Death In Car Crash

Tim Shires was caught up in his second near fatal car crash in three months.

A Bristol DJ has been talking about another narrow escape after an out of control speeding car missed his vehicle by just two inches.

Tim Shires was driving back to the city after a late night gig in Plymouth over the weekend.

He witnessed the car speeding down the A370 Long Ashton by-pass towards him. It then lost control, bounced off the embankment and crashed. The driver was taken to hospital.

Tim was also caught up in the M5 tragedy in November near Bridgwater in which seven people died.

The DJ, who is also the PA announcer for Bristol City Football Club, told us:

"It was scary stuff. When I got out the car my legs just turned to jelly. In twelve years of driving, I haven't seen any major accidents and now it's been two in a matter of weeks. You just freeze, you don't know what to think and you have that moment afterwards when you think, wow, what just happened there."

With the final taking place in Bristol on Saturday, May 26th, it is hoped the game will attract a sell-out crowd at Ashton Gate, which has a capacity of over 21,000. The kick-off time has yet to be confirmed for the game, which will be screened live on Sky Sports.

City chief executive Guy Price said: "We are delighted to be hosting the Women's FA Cup Final at Ashton Gate. We know 2012 will be the nation's year of sport and we want to make sure Bristol is a shining light in the national sports calendar.

"The match will be the pinnacle of a week of sports in Bristol, which also sees the Olympic Torch Relay and Bristol 10k take place. Hosting the Women's FA Cup Final gives the city a great chance to showcase what sport in Bristol has to offer.

"We want to bring as many people together as possible for this event, ensuring local people and communities play a part in what will be a great week of sport for Bristol.

"We are very proud to be hosting the match and look forward to putting on a fantastic event at Ashton Gate for the final."

Sue Hough, Chair of the FA Women's Committee, said: "We are delighted to be taking this year's Final to Bristol for the first time. Ashton Gate is a fantastic stadium with great facilities and has a proven track record in hosting matches with The FA.

"With Bristol being the home of one of our top women's football clubs, Bristol Academy, we are really hoping that fans, families and teams from across the region, and across the country as a whole, will help us make this a truly memorable occasion in the women's football calendar.

"The 2012 Final in May will take place during our second season of the Women's Super League, just ahead of the England Senior Women's vital Euro Qualifier in June against Holland and then of course, the Olympics in July where Team GB will be represented in the women's football competition for the very first time. 2012 promises to be a fantastic year for the sport."

In 2010, Ashton Gate hosted an England Men's Under 21s international friendly against Uzbekistan, which England won 2-0.

Residents Back In Burnham Homes

The police cordon has been lifted by police after man arrested under Explosives Act.

Avon and Somerset Police say residents were allowed back in their homes last night after the house in Beatty Way in Burnham-On-Sea was declared safe following a search by police and the army bomb disposal team.

They have removed some items from the house and some for disposal.

Chief Superintendent Daimon Tilley said yesterday afternoon: "As a result of some information we received, we obtained a warrant under the Explosives Act and attended an address in Beatty Way, Burnham-on-Sea at 7.45 this morning.

"A 36-year-old man was arrested and taken into custody.

"As is normal practice, the EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) were alerted and called out to the scene and we await the outcome of their enquiries.

"Based on their initial advice, a 100-metre cordon was set up around the end terrace house.

"EoD officers then began a detailed search of the property, garden and outbuildings.

"As a precautionary measure we have evacuated homes within the cordon. Some 17 people so far have been taken to a nearby rest centre.

"We are determined to do everything we possibly can to minimise the disruption to people's daily lives and will return people back to their homes as soon as possible.

"I'm sure local residents will understand and I'd like to thank them for their patience and co-operation.

"We have been working closely with various partner agencies and organisations in response to this incident, and are grateful for their assistance.

"We will, of course, be observing our obligations under the Contempt of Court Act, and will therefore not be naming or confirming the identity of the individual we arrested today."

Football School For Bristol Kids

Bristol City set up new centres across the city to boost sport and fitness.

Bristol will soon see nine new Player Development Centres opening across the city from today, until July.

Launched by the Bristol City Community Trust as part of a bigger push to support inclusion, fitness and education through sport, the centres will aim to develop the football skills of girls and boys from across the city and wider region.

The Player Development Centres will deliver sessions supported by guest appearances from a host of football stars including ex-England international and current City number one David James, strikers Brett Pitman and John Stead, defender James Wilson and local lad and City favourite, Cole Skuse.

The centres have been designed to ensure that as many people as possible can benefit from the courses on offer, with centres based in locations across the city and region including; Ashton, Fishponds, Filton, Lawrence Western, Keynsham, Knowle West, Portishead and Withywood.

Director of the Bristol City Community Trust, Amy Kington said: "The development centres offer a real and exciting prospect for young people to fall in love with the game and develop the skills. The sessions delivered are fun, progressive and inclusive. We're hoping that by expanding the courses throughout nine locations across the city, more people can benefit from what we have to offer."

Bristol City Community Trust Ambassador, David James said: "I have to say, I'm looking forward to my new role as a guest coach. The development centres are a great way of helping to develop young players.

The courses offer children the chance to enjoy the game through developing specific qualities and skills, as opposed to focusing purely on competitive games. The Bristol City Community Trust are working hard to ensure that as many people as possible can benefit from this new scheme, with centres opening all over the city."

Book Shop Saved By Community

The future of a second-hand bookshop in Clevedon is secure after thousands of pounds is raised by local residents.

The store, in Clevedon, North Somerset, will reopen on New Year's Eve after an appeal for help led to almost 300 people investing money to become "co-owners" of a community bookshop co-operative.

The shop had been open for 14 years but was facing closure after the owner announced his retirement.

Volunteers and members of the new co-operative have spent the past few weeks painting and decorating the shop before tomorrow's opening.

Angela Everitt, secretary of the new co-operative, said: "We've have been overwhelmed by the support that we have received. Our aim was to attract a large number of investors who, as co-owners, will have a say in how the enterprise is run.

"People have invested from just £10 to raise a total of £7,500 which, coupled with loan money and grants, has enabled the community to save this store.

"Members and volunteers have worked hard to refurbish the store, new flooring has gone down and the final task will be to stock our great new bookcases.

"We hope that members and customers alike will join us on New Year's Eve and, this also gives any last-minute investors a chance to drop off their applications."

Michael Fairclough, the Co-operative Group's head of community and co-operative investment, said: "This is another example of a determined community having a say in the running of a business or service important to them and illustrates how communities, by embracing the co-operative model, can support the economy for future generations and tackle some of the unprecedented challenges facing our society and the environment.

"The co-operative business model offers an alternative and robust approach to enterprise that is contributing to the rebuilding of a more balanced and stable economy.

"As the general public becomes increasingly concerned for environment, accountability and sustainability and, more and more people rediscover the benefits of self-help and mutual ownership, we will see co-operatives playing an increasing part in fostering the creation and growth of future enterprises."

The intrepid duo and a small team started their expedition from The Farthest Point South where Ernest Shackleton had to turn back on January 9, 1909.

Amelia spent 17 nights on the ice and endured sub zero temperatures (minus 35/minus 50 with windchill), whiteouts, 24 hour daylight and sleepless nights due to her father’s snoring.

Amelia transported to the South Pole a photograph of Ernest Shackleton and a special commemorative coin, gifts from Alexandra Shackleton, his granddaughter.

Speaking from the South Pole Amelia said, "This expedition has been an extraordinary experience. The biggest challenges were the freezing cold, dried food, pulling frozen poo in a sledge, Dad’s snoring.

The best bit has been experiencing what Dad does on expeditions. It’s the first time I’ve been on a trek with him and now I know what it’s like. Would I do it again? I’ll have to think about that after a few nights sleep!”

Amelia, who attends Prior Park College in Bath, where she is studying for four AS levels, admitted she didn’t do any homework on the expedition despite her original good intentions.

"I brought a lot of homework with me but Dad took most of the books out of my sledge to ‘keep the weight down’. We set up camp early evening and by the time we sorted our kit out and had dinner I was shattered and aching. I think I’ll have a lot of homework to do over the Christmas holidays!”

Amelia, who was the youngest person in the team by several decades, admits she most missed her friends..

"I’ve really missed my friends and want to thank them for all their messages which kept me going. I’m most looking forward to a comfy bed, a shower and some chocolate brownies.”

David, who led the Nimrod expedition, was the first Briton to reach the South Pole solo and unsupported (in 1996).

He said, "Amelia has done amazingly well. I’m very proud of her. This expedition was probably the most challenging for me.

I’m very protective of Amelia who is my youngest daughter.

It’s one thing going off on an expedition on your own but another thing when you are looking after your own teenager daughter.

Obviously, I wanted to make sure she returned to the UK with all her fingers and toes!”

"Shackleton has always been my hero and it was a special experience to share those last 97 miles with Amelia. We had the most unbelievable weather and feel Shackleton looked after us.”

Turnip Prize Announced In West Country Pub

Prize has been awarded to the most "rubbish piece of art work."

This year’s prize has been awarded to Jim Drew for his work entitled "Jamming with Muddy Waters” (A large jar containing muddy water and jam) at a ceremony held at The New Inn, Wedmore, Somerset.

The prize is always a turnip mounted on a six-inch nail.

Organisers said, "They were delighted with the lack of effort taken to create the work.”

Jim said, "I am amazed to win this most coveted art award on my first occasion and I truly feel that the lack of effort has really paid off. I aimed low and luckily reached far lower than I could have dreamed. I am amazed at what my mediocrity and indifference has achieved”.

Organiser Trevor Prideaux said, "This year’s event attracted a total of 69 entries, which by strange coincidence is exactly the same amount as last year. It’s fantastic that Jim has won, he clearly has what it takes to be recognised in modern art circles and will be remembered in art history for no time at all!

It’s mud in the eye of the Turner Prize which is ageist and I believe that over the last thirteen years the artists entering ‘The Turnip Prize’ have created by far better works than Nicholas Serota and The Tate Britain Gallery could ever wish to exhibit.”

Somerset Snow Tweets

"Gritter Twitter" set up to enable information about weather, roads and gritters sent out to mobile phones.

Following two harsh winters, residents in Somerset can now get up to date information - by Twitter.

Short bursts of essential information will be posted on Twitter through the @somersetgritter page when freezing conditions are likely or the county is dealing with snow.

The account is dedicated to passing on details of weather forecasts received by the highways depots, and publicising when the gritter fleet has gone into action.

Somerset County Council Cabinet Member for Highways, Cllr Harvey Siggs, said: "I want us all to tackle winter together in Somerset, and on top of all the other services we provide, one way the Council can contribute to this collective effort is to pass on important information.

The Twitter account means we can let everyone know when the main roads are being salted and share our forecasts to help residents and businesses prepare. This might be by planning journeys or safely spreading salt around where they live and work.

The public need to be well informed about our winter maintenance service and feel like a vital player in the team when we tackle winter together. The Somerset Gritter account is a superb way to do that instantly and effectively."
