Measles Cases On The Up

Parents in the South West are being urged to make sure their children are protected from Measles.

The warning has come from NHS Bristol, Bath and North Somerset. Who've said there has been a series of confirmed cases of the disease across the South West.

In 2010, a total of five cases were reported across the former Avon area. But, in 2011, confirmed cases increased to 30 - with over half of those cases in children under 16 years old.

A spokesperson said that in recent years, not enough children have been fully vaccinated and so they are susceptible to infection. When they get measles, they pass it on to others.

Almost a quarter of children aged five in Bristol have not received two doses of the vaccine, so may be at risk of getting infected.

In South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Bath and North East Somerset areas at least one in 10 five year olds are not fully protected.

Adam Finn, Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Bristol and a Consultant at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children said: "We are reminding parents and young adults that measles can be a severe infection.

"One in 1000 cases is fatal and many more become seriously ill. Two doses of the MMR vaccine are necessary to provide protection."

Name Twerton Park For £50

Bosses at Bath City are offering fans the chance to rename their home ground for just fifty pounds.

The club have launched a special ticket for the Easter Monday match for four people, and in with the cost of that, you get one entry into a lucky dip draw to rename the stadium.

It is only being renamed for next season, and bosses say they reserve the right to reject a name if they feel it's inappropriate.

Entrants don’t have to attend the match for your name to be valid, but club officials are hoping that support for the scheme will be high.

Purchases can be made online using PayPal, so it is possible entries may come in from across the UK and perhaps beyond.

Entrants are encouraged to be creative when it comes to choosing a name, but fans are entitled to enter the draw with the name ‘Twerton Park’ if they'd prefer it not to change.

Council Tax Contributions To Police Frozen

The Chairman of the Avon and Somerset Police Authority says the force will have to take cuts "on the chin" like everyone else.

The Authority has decided to freeze the amount of our Council Tax payments which go to the force, despite the fact it has to save £12.3m in the next financial year.

The money from Council Tax provides around a third of their budget. However, by agreeing to freeze the amount they will now receive additional funding from the government.

The decision was reached after consulting with people in the region, as Chairman of the Authority Peter Heffer explains: "For the first time ever the public have said to us that they think we should freeze the Council Tax.

"In years past they have always said that they appreciate what the police do, it's a very good service and that they would pay more for policing. That's not the case this year."

He added it's to be expected in the current climate when everyone is feeling the pinch: "I'd love to see the police funded as well as they can but along the line there'll be an educationalist calling for more money for education, someone else calling for more money for hospitals and so on.

"If that were all added together, then there would be a huge increase burden of tax and people can't afford it. We have to take it on the chin like other services as well."

Police Authority Prepare For Budget

Avon and Somerset Police Authority are preparing for a meeting today, where they will discuss their yearly budget.

The Authority make all of the financial decisions that affect Avon and Somerset Police's day to day work.

Later today, they'll be deciding if they should accept a three percent bonus from the Government, in exchange for freezing the amount of money that they take from council taxes for the next three years.

Police Authority Chair Dr Peter Heffer says the Government's freeze could potentially store up more problems for the under-funded force in future years, on top of the challenging £40m central government grant cuts announced in October 2010.

Dr Heffer said: "The freeze sounds good on paper but is actually quite short-sighted and stores up bigger problems for us the following year. We know that if we take the one off payment the council tax will not be increased."

Avon and Somerset Police Authority is set to deliver £12.4m savings this financial year and faces further savings of £11.5m for 2012/13.

The decision follows a consultation that was open to members of the public throughout January.

Better Support For Domestic Abuse Victims

Bosses at North Somerset Council say they're looking at ways to improve what services they offer for victims in the region.

It's after a charity published a report saying they needed to better understand the needs of those affected and for more money to be made available.

The Survivors Empowering and Educating Domestic Abuse Services (Seeds) questioned over 100 women find out what they'd experienced after seeking help through local services.

In a statement the council said:

"We already have some good services on offer to those who have suffered domestic abuse, but we are always looking at improving those services.

We will be studying the report and its conclusions in detail and seeing if they can be used to improve the services we currently provide."

Bristol People To Design New Currency

Plans for a new Bristol Pound have been announced as a way of keeping local people's money within the City.

But so far, the money only has a basic template, and people who live and work in the City are being asked for their ideas for what the money should look like.

Ciaran Mundy is the director of the scheme. He said: "This is Bristol Pounds for Bristol people, it makes sense to us that they get to design the money.

"It'll be in their pockets, We want to make sure that everyone has an input as to what we celebrate."

The templates for the notes, which come in the form of £1, £5, £10 and £20 have so far got themes of Cycling, a Brunel Wow! Gorilla, A Cockrel and the SS Great Britain.

But all that could change, as people start to suggest their favourite Bristol Icons.

The plans are being backed by the Bristol Credit Union, who are offering bank accounts to people who want to store their local currency.

The currency is due to launch on May 21st, and it will then be accepted in most local independant stores.

Ciaran Mundy went on to say: "We've got a fantastic range of businesses, and this scheme, effectively is there to get more of the economy to be directed towards the independant sector.

"I think most people get that."

The money can be used by businesses to pay for business rates, after being supported by the Council - but exchanging it to Sterling will cost 5 percent.

Exclusive: Ed Sheeran To Perform In Bristol - May 22nd

Ed Sheeran has confirmed he will be appearing in Bristol on May 22nd for one exclusive gig at The Fleece, on behalf of Charity One25.

It is currently the only way to see the Triple Platinum selling artist in the City, as his tour is sold out around major venues outside Bristol.

Tickets to this intimate Bristol gig are only available to those who raise £125 or over through One25's 'Give it up for One25' campaign.

Ed Sheeran has sold more copies of his debut album than any other artist in the last ten years and is nominated for four BRIT Awards. The chance to get tickets to his exclusive Bristol concert is still open to anyone who takes part in the 'Give it up' campaign and raises £125 for One25.

One25 is a Bristol based charity, which reaches out to vulnerable women trapped in street sex-work, supporting them to break free and build new lives free from violence, poverty and addiction. Ed Sheeran explains his reason for supporting the cause; "It's good to show insight that these people are real people with real emotions and they deserve the same charity work as anyone else."

Louise Willott, who is organising the event told us "It's a full length set, we're gonna make the most of this amazing opportunity to have Ed play for us.

"The Fleece is quite a small venue - it only holds about four hundred, which makes it extra exciting as it's really intimate and Ed's not playing those size venues anymore."

One25 are still encouraging people to get involved by giving something up between now and the 8th March when the campaign ends.

City Breaks For Bristol Holiday Makers

Bristol Airport reports a surge in bookings for city breaks because of mild winter.

The mild weather in December and January has led to more Bristol holiday makers to opt for sightseeking city breaks and ski holidays this half term, rather than a beach holiday in the sun.

Ali Gayward, easyJet’s UK Commercial Manager, said:

"February is a great time for exploring some of Europe’s most exciting cities and the mild weather throughout the majority of winter has definitely left people with less of a longing to head straight for traditional beach destinations and more of an inclination to satisfy their wanderlust.”

March Against Bristol Ice Rink Closure

Thousands have now signed petition to keep the rink open.

The ice rink has been going for 45 years, but is now set to be turned into student flats.

The lease runs out next year and the property’s owner, Unite have decided not to renew the lease.

Unite say they’ve decided to redevelop the building into student flats.

There are worries about what that will mean for the ice hockey team though who since re-forming in 2009 have now 4 teams.

An online petition has already attracted more than 3,700 signatures and an official petition has been lodged with the council.

Today, protesters against the closure will be marching from the rink to Cabot Circus with leaflets highlighting why the rink should remain in the city.

Firefighters Praise Bristol Dog Owner

Animal rescued from lake after owner calls 999.

Avon Fire and Rescue have praised a Bristol woman for calling 999 when her dog became trapped in a frozen lake, instead of trying to rescue him herself.

When crews arrived at the water in Wharf Lane in Portbury, they found Clifford the Collie/Jack Russell cross, in the middle of the lake treading water.

It’s thought he had been there for around 45 minutes in around 4ft of water.

Firefighters wearing dry suits broke the ice on the lake and waded into the water with their rescue sled. When they reached the animal they assisted it on to the sled and brought it to safety. It was then reunited with its owner and appeared to be unharmed.

Fire spokeswoman Stephanie Mounsey said: "Avon Fire & Rescue Service would like to praise the actions of the owner who did not attempt to rescue the dog and risk falling through the ice. Instead she dialled 999 and asked for the fire and rescue service.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service would like to remind people of the dangers of frozen lakes and ponds. As the winter weather takes hold the service is urging people to take care when out and about.

Fortunately in this case the dog and the owner were unharmed but had the owner entered the water it may have been a different story.

While the ice may appear to look thick and able to take your weight, that may not be the case and just a few seconds in freezing water could quickly lead to hypothermia and unconsciousness."

Bristol Man Ordered To Pay Back What He Stole

Terry Pocock has been told he must pay back over £75,000 at a confiscation hearing.

Financial adviser was jailed for nine months last October after duping a 97-year-old relative out of her cash.

In 2002 the woman signed an Enduring Power of Attorney, giving Pocock control over her property and affairs. This was never registered and therefore never validated.

Pocock was caught out when she began to run out of money to cover her care home costs. The 54-year-old from Hanham admitted taking the money for himself and was charged with making false representation to make or gain for self or another or to cause loss to another, or expose other to risk.

He has now been given six months to pay back the money or else he'll face an additional 21 months in prison.

Dr Kirstie Cogram, manager of Avon and Somerset Police's Financial Investigation Unit said: "We are committed to seizing any assets that criminals have gained as a result of crime. It is not acceptable that criminals benefit from illegal activities and we will relentlessly pursue them through the courts to ensure their money is taken. By doing this we show criminals that they will not benefit from crime and hopefully deter others from entering a life of crime."

Scout Leader Guilty Of Child Sex Abuse

David Burland from Burnham-on-Sea has been found guilty of sexually assaulting young children in his care over a 23 year period.

The 54-year-old had denied all the 33 charges claiming that there was a conspiracy against him.

But the jury at Taunton Crown Court today found him guilty of all counts.

He had been involved in the Scout movement in the Burnham and Highbridge area but was suspended after the allegations came to light.

Detective Constable Mark Fudge released the following statement after today's verdict: "David Burland abused his position as a scout master to groom and then abuse children in his care. Over a twenty year period his predatory behaviour led to a multiple sexual offences against children who trusted him. He hid behind his role as a scout master and hoped people would not report him.

"Someone did report his inappropriate behaviour and an investigation was quickly launched. This uncovered other victims and I applaud them all for the strength it must have taken to come forward. This demonstrates that we take all allegations of abuse seriously and will explore them thoroughly.

"Today David Burland has been convicted by a jury and awaits his sentence. I hope he now realises the seriousness of these offences and the impact his behaviour has had on his victims."

Pensioner's Life Savings Stolen

Police are appealing for information after an elderly woman became the victim of a distraction burglary in Clevedon.

At around 8.15pm on Tuesday, a man knocked on the 89-year-old's door claiming he'd just moved into a house on Conygar Close and needed to check her fuse box as his electricity had gone out.

Once she opened the door a second man came in behind him. The first man then held her back as the other searched the house and made off with her life savings.

Detective Inspector Julie Mackay said: "This was a despicable crime committed against a vulnerable, elderly lady while she was home alone.

"These offenders targeted her because of her vulnerability to steal her life savings.

"It is possible that these men attempted to enter another address in Clevedon but they failed.

"I would urge anyone who may have been approached by these men to come forward and I would urge all residents to remain vigilant and report the matter to us immediately."

DI Mackay added: "Crimes like these will not be tolerated in North Somerset. We will work tirelessly to bring these offenders to justice."

Police are now looking for two men. The first is described as white around 5ft 7inches tall, in his early 20's and of slim build. The second man is described as white, slightly taller in his 30's. Both spoke with accents.

People are also being reminded to not let anyone into their home unless they're sure they know who they are and to always ask for ID if they claim to be from an organisation or company.

Anyone with information about the incident or who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in and around the Conygar Road area is asked to call police on 101.

'Cheeky' Taxi Driver Annoys Bath Cycling Group

Cycle Bath say that another video highlighting bad driving in Bath's Milsom Street would be treated very differently if cyclists were involved.

The clip was uploaded to the internet this morning, and shows a taxi driver going through bollards and onto the pavement to drive around an HGV Lorry that was blocking the road.

Tim Beadle, from Cycle Bath thinks that it's one rule for drivers and another for cyclists.

He said: "Normally when cyclists - sometimes for good reason - cycle on the pavement to take a shortcut or to avoid dangerous motor traffic, there's calls for cyclists to be taxed, insured, or sometimes even strung up!

"But in this case the driver was just called 'Cheeky'.

"Not many people cycle, which is a shame. But because most people drive, they are sympathetic to other people who drive."

The video was filmed in the same street that shop owner Sarah Duncan was filmed in a road rage incident that went viral last week.

Occupy Bristol Eviction

Workers from Bristol City council arrived at College Green at 4.30am this morning to remove the last few protestors and clear up the last traces.

That's according to the council's updates on twitter this morning.

We told you last week most of the protestors had already moved on following an eviction notice being served.

The land is owned by Bristol Cathedral but looked after by the city council.

At the weekend, some protestors had offered to help with restoring the green by planting grass seed. The council have said although they welcome the offer, they'd prefer to organise their own contractors to carry out the work, but don't mind people coming to help.

This morning waste contractors were on site clearing up the last bits of rubbish.

Green Light For Improved Police Facilities

£129m is going to be spent on improving the Avon and Somerset Police estate.

The Home Office has agreed to the privately funded scheme to be carried out by the Blue Light Partnership, a consortium which is led by Bilfinger Berger Project Investments and comprising Miller Construction and Cofely.

They will be responsible for building new operational base in Bridgwater, two new custody centres in Patchway and Keynsham, two police stations and a firearms training centre in Portishead.

Avon and Somerset Police Authority Deputy Chair Councillor Claire Gordon said: "This is a good news story for Avon and Somerset. It has been a long journey, and I am delighted that in approving the business case, the Home Office and Treasury have recognised the strength of these proposals and the value for money they will deliver. This project has met many tests for being affordable and cost effective for taxpayers and will provide many jobs for the local area.

"This much needed investment will deliver an important part of the Constabulary's programme to re-organise our workforce so they are where the public need them. It will provide flexible, responsive and sustainable buildings that will leave a lasting legacy for the delivery of police services in Avon and Somerset."

Chief Constable Colin Port said: "We are wholly committed to making the communities of Avon and Somerset feel and be safe by improving our performance and providing the best service we can, in spite of the financial challenges we are facing.

"Thanks to the PFI, our custody capacity will increase by 27% once the three new custody and crime investigation centres are completed, and their bespoke facilities will allow us to process offenders more swiftly and get officers back on to the streets as quickly as possible.

"As a police service and a major employer it is even more important at times such as these to channel investment and employment opportunities back into the local economy. Blue Light Partnership will build on our work with young people and offenders and place a high level of orders for service and sub contracts within our Force area".

Jitesh Patel, Project Director at Bilfinger said: "This is a long-term partnership with the Authority and Constabulary, and a significant investment for the local area. We have designed highly sustainable buildings that are efficient and flexible to respond to future needs. Our local supply chain is keen to continue to engage with and provide opportunity for local business and employment."

Planning permission for the developments will be submitted over the coming weeks with construction scheduled to start in September 2012, with the first building completed in January 2014 and the last in March 2014.

Bristol Could Still Have An Ice Rink

The owners of the building which houses the Bristol Ice Rink say they're looking at creating a leisure space in the new development - which might include an ice rink.

Unite are planning to turn the site into student flats and have now revealed their first set of ideas about what might happen to the site.

A statement from the company says: "We met with representatives from the Bristol Ice Rink User Group to explain the background to our proposals and discuss the option of a smaller, recreational ice rink within the proposed new student accommodation development that we have presented to John Nike Group.

"The new leisure space will not be large enough for a full-sized rink, but whatever the outcome of these discussions, UNITE is committed to using the space in a way that continues to provide leisure facilities for the city.

"We decided to redevelop the site after discussions with John Nike Group, about the long-term sustainability of the current ice rink. Their lease expires in January 2013, which will mean the closure of the rink in October 2012 to allow for decommissioning.

"This is a very unusual situation for UNITE, as our developments usually take place on redundant or empty sites where the addition of student accommodation often helps regenerate a depressed area. We regret that this development will mean the loss of the Bristol Ice Rink; however, believe that our plans for the site will, ultimately, benefit the city.

"Providing a home for more students in the city centre, with their associated spending power, will provide a boost to other businesses, and the new managed student accommodation

will support the future plans of the Bristol's universities, while alleviating pressure from students on the city's private housing.

"Our discussions with local amenity groups are on-going and we will be widening this to include neighbours, local businesses and adjacent residents to inform the design of the new building.

"We will be also hosting a public exhibition with more details of our plans for the site, soon. Subject to receiving planning permission the scheme could open for September 2014."

Bristol City Council: "We Want A Stadium At Ashton Vale"

That's the call from Bristol City Council on the day a member of the Long Ashton Parish Council says they're always willing to talk about a compromise for the new Bristol City ground.

Those against the plans for the Ashton Vale site are challenging how Bristol City Council reached its decision to allow the 42 acre stretch of land to be split between the development and a designated Town and Village Green.

The judicial review was requested by a local resident and is being supported by the Long Ashton Parish Council.

However, the Judge who granted it suggested that because of the site's size he'd like to see all parties come together and try and reach a compromise.

Today, Councillor Simon Cook, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Capital Projects has again backed this idea. He said: "We want a stadium at Ashton Vale. It will be good for the city, and bring with it much needed jobs.

"We accept that local residents have natural concerns, such as the noise and disruption that will follow from having a stadium built
nearby, and we want to do what we can to address those concerns. A whole range of solid, physical measures is possible.

"The Council has written this week to the solicitors acting for the one local resident who is taking us to Court to dispute the decision we took
that would allow a stadium to be built on the northern part of the Ashton Vale site [i.e. that part that has not been registered as a Town and Village Green]. The judge who first considered that single resident's application to the court, urged all parties to compromise. We are showing leadership by publicly taking that first step towards a compromise, so that a stadium can be built, but whilst local residents' concerns can still be addressed.

"If this one local person who is taking us to court or the Parish Council spending their taxpayers' money on legal fees - wants to stop a process costing huge amounts of tax payers' money and instead discuss a compromise that might allow for a stadium, but also for additional safeguards for local residents, we are ready to look at whatever he/she wants to come back and ask for, or to sit down and talk it through. The choice is theirs.

"We want all parties involved - whether this one local resident, or their neighbours or the local Parish Council - or the football club and the landowner - to all equally accept that a lengthy and costly legal process is divisive to the community and bad for the city.

"We have tried independent mediation previously - we paid for those different parties to sit down with professional arbitrators to see if they could reach a compromise, but they failed.

"Now the judge has urged compromise, and the council has joined this call, we urge all parties to find a way forward through compromise.

"The ball is squarely in the court of the one anonymous local resident named on the court papers by three randomly chosen initials, and also
the Parish Council funding legal action. We hope that they will follow our lead and accept the invitation to end this battle with an honorable compromise."

However, Councillor Charles Cave from Long Ashton Parish Council says they are always willing to talk; they've even been speaking to the football club directly.

"In fact I had a meeting with Guy Price this morning," said Councillor Cave, "We're discussing number of issues where the football club can help youths in the village for example. We're communicating which I think is what ones got to do."

He added that they'd be happy to hold further talks with Bristol City Council as long as they had some offer of compromise in mind: "Absolutely no harm in talking and I think discussing things can always help.

"Immediately, there's not something which springs to mind that I would think as a compromise, but let's talk about it."

Bill Actor Found Dead In Bristol

Colin Tarrant thought to have committed suicide at his home in the city.

One of the stars of The Bill has been found dead.

Colin Tarrant played Inspector Andrew Monroe in the ITV police drama for more than a decade.

Reports in today's papers say his son discovered the 59-year-old's body with a number of knife injuries at his home in Bristol.

No details of his death were given, but the People reported the actor died in a suspected suicide and was found at his home in Bristol with knife wounds.

Tarrant, 59, had performed in a number of stage shows since leaving the long-running ITV police drama, which was axed in 2010.

A statement released on behalf of his family said he died suddenly at Bristol Royal Infirmary on Thursday.

It added: "Colin was best known as Inspector Andrew Monroe in the television series The Bill, a part he played very happily for many years.

"Since leaving the series he has triumphed on stage as Brian Clough in The Spirit Of The Man and had recently played John in the enormously successful stage production of Calendar Girls, and to which he would have returned this autumn."

West End theatre producer David Pugh added: "Colin was a lovely man, he loved the theatre, his politics and his family, our hearts must go out to his son Juma, his partner Sabrina and their baby son Louis."

The Bill, set in the fictional London area of Sun Hill, was launched as a series in 1984 and ran for 26 years.

Despite having a cult following, audience numbers fell in later years and it was eventually axed after 2,400 episodes

Bath Pensioner Takes On Robbers

Police have praised the efforts of Gordon King who tried to stop two bank robbers.

The 88-year-old witnessed the men robbing a security van which was delivering cash to the Lloyds TSB bank on Moorland Road on Wednesday morning at around 11.15am.

The former policeman and Second World War veteran ran to the rescue and struck one of the offenders over the head with his walking stick to try and stop him.

Mr King says he didn't think twice about jumping in and that he'd do it again even though he was slightly injured in the scuffle: "I had come up to go the shop to get a washing up bowl. I was talking to some people so that held me up for a few minutes. But then I was coming to cross the road (Crandale Road) and the security van pulled up by the bank.

"My first thought was that it wasn't very good security only having one man. Then something made me look again and I realised what was happening. I got my stick and gave him a whack. Then I gave him a few more whacks and broke my stick over his head. I would've laid him out, but then this other guy came over and pushed me down in the road."

Mr King says he drew on his 29 years as a police officer in Bath: "It was instinct. I just knew what was happening. I thought you don't see people in balaclavas unless something is wrong. I jumped straight in and didn't think twice. Afterwards I did think to myself that they could've had a knife or a gun. But I would absolutely do it again.

"I may be 88 but I am still fit and strong. I do all my own gardening. After all that effort I just hope the police catch them."

The great-grandfather of two's aluminium walking stick was broken in the incident and he was left with a bump to his head, which needed hospital treatment.

Detective Chief Inspector David Gill, who is leading the investigation, praised Mr King for his efforts: "From our point of view there is a bit of a mixed message because we don't want to say to people 'don't get involved' but in this situation Mr King should be highly commended for what he did. I think both his family and the citizens of Bath would be amazed at what has gone on.

"He certainly acted on instinct with no fear for his own safety and took steps to stop that crime taking place. Unfortunately on this occasion the two people got away. But it is great that Mr King is still in one piece and as lively as he is today."

Officers believe the men are part of an organised gang who carry out attacks across the country.

A black Mercedes with false registration plates, Y840 NGW, was later discovered with a cash box inside. Police want to hear from anyone who may have seen the vehicle either before or after the incident.

The car was abandoned on Maybrick Road and people may have seen two men running away from it and getting into another vehicle.

There was also a white Transit-style van travelling behind the Mercedes, which could be linked to the crime or whose driver could be a key witness.

One of the men is described as white, and was wearing a balaclava, while the other was black and wearing a beanie hat.

Anyone able to help is asked to contact police at Bath on 101.

Bristol DJ Cheats Death In Car Crash

Tim Shires was caught up in his second near fatal car crash in three months.

A Bristol DJ has been talking about another narrow escape after an out of control speeding car missed his vehicle by just two inches.

Tim Shires was driving back to the city after a late night gig in Plymouth over the weekend.

He witnessed the car speeding down the A370 Long Ashton by-pass towards him. It then lost control, bounced off the embankment and crashed. The driver was taken to hospital.

Tim was also caught up in the M5 tragedy in November near Bridgwater in which seven people died.

The DJ, who is also the PA announcer for Bristol City Football Club, told us:

"It was scary stuff. When I got out the car my legs just turned to jelly. In twelve years of driving, I haven't seen any major accidents and now it's been two in a matter of weeks. You just freeze, you don't know what to think and you have that moment afterwards when you think, wow, what just happened there."

Avon and Somerset Police Second In Rape Convictions

The force are in the top 2 in the country at bringing offenders to justice and have today, launched a DVD in schools to teach young people how to avoid becoming a victim.

It's one of the last stages in a 5 year project to improve how the crime is dealt with and Sarah Crew - who's in charge of dealing with rapes told us it's going to rolled out across the country: "There is a plan by the Home Office to deliver a campaign in the Spring aimed at teenagers and young people and talking about rape and sexual assault.

"We're working with the Home Office to ensure the work we've done here forms a part of that campaign.

"If we are truly to make our communities safer from the perpetrators of serious sexual assault, five elements need to be in place. There must be greater public awareness of what is acceptable in sexual relationships and what rape is - everyone must understand that when it comes to consent, 'Only Yes means Yes'.

"There must also be trust and confidence in the services available sufficient for young people to come forward and seek help when they have been raped, as well as excellent victim centred care, support and advocacy services that help victims get over their trauma immediately and in the days, weeks and months that follow."

Supt Crew added: "This package is a valuable tool in tackling these elements. It not only educates young people in a bid to prevent them from becoming victims of such crimes but also signposts them to support services and the help that is available.

"Young people must remember that consent needs to be clear and they should never blame themselves should they become a victim of these crimes, Only Yes means Yes."

For more help if you or someone you know might have been a victim head the The Bridge.

Hillside: Calls For Further Criminal Charges

A local Councillor wants charges to be brought against senior staff at Hillside First Primary following a child sex abuse scandal.

Former teacher, Nigel Leat was jailed last year for abusing five pupils at the school in Weston-super-Mare over a five year period.

Yesterday the results of a serious case review were published and highlighted the failures of senior management at the school to act despite concerns about him being raised several times.

Over the 15 years he worked at there, incidents of Nigel Leat's inappropriate behaviour with pupils were raised on 30 occasions. Only 11 of these were formally reported. Head teacher at the time, Chris Hood, left his post in December after being suspended in January last year.

The serious case review made 35 recommendations including that every school in the country should read the report.

Local Councillor and former Hillside pupil, Mike Bell is now calling for further action to be taken against those in charge: "Nigel Leat is locked up and justice has been done. But the negligence shown by school leaders in ignoring concerns - some 30 warnings over 14 years - cannot be swept under the carpet. The former head teacher has been dismissed and will no doubt fact further sanction from his professional body.

"However, the neglect of duty is so grave and extensive that I believe criminal charges are justified. I have asked the police to consider the case for such charges. This is not just a matter of employment but of criminal neglect of duty to children and the wider public. Action should be taken not just in the interests of natural justice to those involved but also to send a message to all those who hold positions in the public trust that we demand better."

We're still waiting for a response from Avon and Somerset Police.

School Management Blamed In Child Abuse Scandal

A serious case review has found a teacher who abused his students at a school near Weston-super-Mare was able to because of a failure in the school's senior management.

Nigel Leat was jailed in May last year at Bristol Crown Court for sexually assaulting five young girls over a course of five years at Hillside First School.

He pleaded guilty to 36 offences including the attempted rape of a child and was jailed indefinitely.

North Somerset Safeguarding Children Board has now completed its serious case review into the teacher's behaviour and has highlighted a number of issues at senior management level.

During the investigation it was revealed there had been 30 incidents reported to the school about the 51-year-old's "inappropriate or unprofessional conduct" but only 11 of these were properly reported.

The review has made 35 recommendations which include:

- Sending a copy of the report to all schools in the country.

- Making sure schools keep accurate records of all incidents and concerns arising in connection with members of staff so it can been seen if any patterns appear.

- Improvements to child protection training to make sure they can spot grooming and know where to get advice externally if they have any concern.

- There needs to be better assessment and development of schools leaders.

- The way complaints are recorded and dealt with should be improved.

- Recruitment processes need to be reviewed to make sure they're as robust as possible.

- The use of technology should be encouraged but if it's being misused the processes should be in place for other members of staff to be able to raise concerns.

- Although the school's focus on attainment was positive, this was not matched by a positive culture of safeguarding children.

This review has raised concerns about the way staff who work with children are appointed and checked.

Tony Oliver - the Chair of the North Somerset Safeguarding Children Board told us: "The CRB checks were done when Nigel Leat was appointed but since that time no checks have been made. That is a policy issue which perhaps needs to be looked at."

One of the victim's mums - Dawn has launched a petition calling for the government to introduce child protection awareness lessons in the national curriculum and also have spot checks in place for all existing and prospective staff members. "We're trying to raise the awareness of child protection. I've just got to fight for my children now. We're trying to improve the law and improve education that safe touch and no secrets needs to be taught from a young age."

The campaigners need 100,000 signatures in order for the issue to be talked about in Parliament - you can sign it here.

Bath Author Sets The Record Straight

A case of mistaken identity has led to a writer from Bath getting 2,000 hits an hour on her website.

Sarah Duncan shares the same name and city as the woman whose road rage incident became an internet hit.

Footage of the other Sarah Duncan - a local shop owner - getting into an argument with a man filming her trying to drive up a closed street was watched nearly 40,000 times on YouTube before it was taken down.

However, Sarah Duncan - the author - has been caught up in all the excitement with people thinking she's the woman in the film.

She's been inundated with people contacting her asking if it's her but she told us it's definitely not: "I don't drive an Audi, I don't wear green, I've got short dark curly hair, I'm just not the same person."

The story has gone right across the globe with people as far away at California trying to get it touch: "It is incredible how one very small incident has just blown up and gone everywhere around the world, I'm waiting to see who gets in touch with me next.

"Within an about an hour I had 2,000 hits coming via Google on to my blog."

Yesterday, it was revealed that Bath police are reviewing the footage to see if any police action is needed. They're also investigating a series of abusive phone calls made to the woman in the film since the incident.

In a statement, Steve Mildren Bath City Centre Neighbourhood Inspector said: "We are looking at the mobile phone footage to see if any police action is appropriate. But whatever happened between the woman and the man who filmed her, it is unacceptable that unknown people should then start sending abusive and threatening messages and phone calls.

"We take this seriously and are investigating robustly the criminal offences."

Jo Yeates' Landlord Formally Accuses Police Of Leak

Today, Chris Jefferies has accused Avon and Somerset Police of leaking information about him to journalists following his arrest on suspicion of murdering the Bristol architect.

In a statement released by Stokoe Partnership, it said: "It has become apparent that evidence put before the Leveson Inquiry confirms our earliest concerns about the confidentiality with which the arrest and detention of our client was dealt with by those investigating the murder of Joanna Yeates.

"As a result of our attendance at the police station and of our reviewing of the material in the media, it became apparent that information had been deliberately leaked by as yet unidentified individuals in flagrant breach of their duty."

This comes after the editor of the Daily Mirror, Richard Wallace gave a statement during the Leveson inquiry which said: "When Mr Jefferies was arrested on December 30th, the content desk informed me that off the record the police were saying that they were confident Mr Jefferies was their man.

The Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset Police, Colin Port has denied those claims and said the force was "actively challenging" the comments.

He went on to say in a statement: "I am aware of the allegations made by the solicitor who has clearly attempted to seize the moment apparently provided by Mr Wallace’s presentation at the Leveson Inquiry last week.

"We have conducted a thorough investigation into all of Mr Wallace’s assertions. We have not found any substance to the suggestion of ‘off-the-record background briefings’ by Avon and Somerset Police relating to Mr Jefferies. Ryan Parry, the senior Mirror reporter, confirmed in his evidence to the Inquiry yesterday that he had not had any ‘off the record briefings’ about Mr Jefferies.

"I am extremely concerned that the solicitor should be so intemperate and inaccurate in his comments made public. Surely one of the lessons that has been learnt from his client’s experience is to treat media commentary with caution."

Chris Jefferies - who owned Jo's flat at 44 Canynge Road in Clifton, was questioned by police for two days in connection with her murder. He was later released without charge.

During the trial of Vincent Tabak, Jo's neighbour who was eventually sentenced to life for her murder, it was revealed Tabak had contacted police during the investigation with information that falsely implicated Jefferies of the crime.

Ed Sheeran To Perform For Bristol Charity One25

Ed Sheeran has just confirmed that he'll be playing a gig later this year to help our Bristol Charity, One25.

The gig's being organised to mark the end of their 'Give It Up for 125' campaign, which asks people to give up something small for one hundred and twenty five days, or something big for one hundred and twenty five hours.

The idea is that everyone who takes part raises at least 1 hundred and 25 pounds for the charity, and they'll then be given a free ticket to the intimate Ed Sheeran gig.

Lu Willott is the organiser of the event. She told us it was Ed's Song, 'The A Team' that really caught their attention as a charity: "One25 helps women who are trapped in street sex work to break free, and this song he sang with such insight.

"It's basically the song of the women's lives we support."

There's still time to sign up for the Give it Up for 125 campaign here.

M4/M5 Works Begin

£88.6M is being spent on creating a managed motorway system for the area.

Roads Minister, Mike Penning will be in Bristol today to mark the official start of work to improve the M4 and M5.

The multi million pound scheme will see the system introduced between junctions 19 and 20 of the M4 and the M5 between junctions 15 and 17, Almondsbury Interchange.

It'll be the first managed motorway scheme in the South West and aims to ease congestion and speed up journey times along the busy network by introducing variable speed limits and the use of the hard shoulder when there is heavy traffic.

The project will take until 2014 to complete and the Highways Agency say delays and disruption throughout the work will be unavoidable but measures have been put in place to help ease this, including the creation of narrow lanes to manage the traffic.

Bristol To Host Women's FA Cup Final

Bristol City FC will host the final this year - for the first time ever.

Last year, Arsenal Ladies beat Bristol Academy 2-0 to lift the trophy for a record eleventh time at the Ricoh Arena in front of nearly 14,000 fans.

With the final taking place in Bristol on Saturday, May 26th, it is hoped the game will attract a sell-out crowd at Ashton Gate, which has a capacity of over 21,000. The kick-off time has yet to be confirmed for the game, which will be screened live on Sky Sports.

City chief executive Guy Price said: "We are delighted to be hosting the Women's FA Cup Final at Ashton Gate. We know 2012 will be the nation's year of sport and we want to make sure Bristol is a shining light in the national sports calendar.

"The match will be the pinnacle of a week of sports in Bristol, which also sees the Olympic Torch Relay and Bristol 10k take place. Hosting the Women's FA Cup Final gives the city a great chance to showcase what sport in Bristol has to offer.

"We want to bring as many people together as possible for this event, ensuring local people and communities play a part in what will be a great week of sport for Bristol.

"We are very proud to be hosting the match and look forward to putting on a fantastic event at Ashton Gate for the final."

Sue Hough, Chair of the FA Women's Committee, said: "We are delighted to be taking this year's Final to Bristol for the first time. Ashton Gate is a fantastic stadium with great facilities and has a proven track record in hosting matches with The FA.

"With Bristol being the home of one of our top women's football clubs, Bristol Academy, we are really hoping that fans, families and teams from across the region, and across the country as a whole, will help us make this a truly memorable occasion in the women's football calendar.

"The 2012 Final in May will take place during our second season of the Women's Super League, just ahead of the England Senior Women's vital Euro Qualifier in June against Holland and then of course, the Olympics in July where Team GB will be represented in the women's football competition for the very first time. 2012 promises to be a fantastic year for the sport."

In 2010, Ashton Gate hosted an England Men's Under 21s international friendly against Uzbekistan, which England won 2-0.

Residents Back In Burnham Homes

The police cordon has been lifted by police after man arrested under Explosives Act.

Avon and Somerset Police say residents were allowed back in their homes last night after the house in Beatty Way in Burnham-On-Sea was declared safe following a search by police and the army bomb disposal team.

They have removed some items from the house and some for disposal.

Chief Superintendent Daimon Tilley said yesterday afternoon: "As a result of some information we received, we obtained a warrant under the Explosives Act and attended an address in Beatty Way, Burnham-on-Sea at 7.45 this morning.

"A 36-year-old man was arrested and taken into custody.

"As is normal practice, the EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) were alerted and called out to the scene and we await the outcome of their enquiries.

"Based on their initial advice, a 100-metre cordon was set up around the end terrace house.

"EoD officers then began a detailed search of the property, garden and outbuildings.

"As a precautionary measure we have evacuated homes within the cordon. Some 17 people so far have been taken to a nearby rest centre.

"We are determined to do everything we possibly can to minimise the disruption to people's daily lives and will return people back to their homes as soon as possible.

"I'm sure local residents will understand and I'd like to thank them for their patience and co-operation.

"We have been working closely with various partner agencies and organisations in response to this incident, and are grateful for their assistance.

"We will, of course, be observing our obligations under the Contempt of Court Act, and will therefore not be naming or confirming the identity of the individual we arrested today."

Concerns Over Badger Cull

A Bristol MP says people in Somerset haven't been properly consulted about plans to trial badger culling.

Yesterday the government announced that West Somerset is one of two areas in the country picked to try out the idea in the Autumn as a way to stop Bovine TB.

However, Kerry McCarthy who represents Bristol East claims there's widespread opposition to the idea: "The is evidence there's difficulties actually getting to the critical mass of badgers, I think you've got to kill at least 70% in an area before it would start to have an effect.

"The main thing is it causes badgers to move around more if they're displaced from their homes and then that spreads TB."

Farmers themselves will fund the scheme which will last for six weeks but Kerry says the idea is already concerning members of the public: "This type of cull that is going to be licensed is actually allowing farmers to roam around and shot badgers as and when they find them. People have expressed concerns to me that they don't really want people roaming around with shotguns."

Every year tens of thousands of cattle have to be slaughtered because they've contracted the disease. But Kerry adds there are alternatives to just shooting badgers: "All the evidence seems to be that it'd be better to invest money in vaccinations which I know has already been tried in some areas and stop some of the movement of cattle as a lot of the TB spreads from cattle to cattle as they're sold at market."

Occupy Bristol Say "We're Staying Until Easter"

After an eviction notice was served by Bristol County Court last Friday, the remaining group of protesters claim they've got the right to stay.

According to the Occupy Bristol Twitter feed, the protest has separated into two separate groups.

It's made up of people who have cleared up and left the site at College Green following the eviction notice, and those who are determined to stay until the bitter end.

One woman from the remaining group at the site said "We haven't sorted out getting everything off the site yet, we will work with the council to make sure everything's put back but they need to work closely with us too.

"We're here probably until the eviction."

Another protester claimed that they had a right to stay longer, despite the notice: "We went to court and were going to contest the decision, because the Dean said that he was happy for us to stay until Easter."

An eviction notice was granted to Bristol City Council by the County Court on Friday the 13th of January.

Calls For Plain Cigarette Packets

9 in 10 young people in the region think less glamorous packaging would put them off smoking. That's according to research carried out by Smokefree South West.

It's thought 200,000 teenagers will start smoking this year by the age of 19 and now the organisation is launching a campaign for cigarettes to be sold in plain packets with more health warnings on to help people kick the habit or put them off before they even start.

The call is backed by Somerset NHS Stop Smoking advisers, as well as charities such as Cancer Research UK, the British Heart Foundation and the Royal College of Physicians.

David Stapleton, Chair of the Smokefree Somerset Alliance, said: "I wonder how many parents even know about the newer packs that feature leading aspirational fashion brands, clearly designed to appeal to image conscious girls, or the shiny holographic packs that appeal to children. Or the fancy sliding packs featuring motorbikes or music imagery, appealing to boys. Plain packs would prevent tobacco companies using clever marketing designs like these to make their product look cool and recruit our children to this deadly addiction.

"The more people who get involved and show their support for this campaign by visiting the ‘plainpacksprotect’ web site, the more likely it is that Parliament will follow Australia's lead in making tobacco packs plain."

Bristol Sports Stars Start Stadium Twitter Campaign

A campaign has been launched by boxer Jane Couch and former Bristol City player Scott Murray who say they're up in arms plans for new sports grounds in the city keep getting pushed back.

Yesterday we told you the group who would like land earmarked for development at Ashton Vale to be protected by it being granted Town Green Status have now won the right to a judicial review. This means the decision on the new stadium for Bristol City could be delayed for at least 2 years.

It was only last week the council turned down plans to re-develop the County Cricket Ground. It was because the enabling development of 147 flats was going to create a tower block about 7 storeys high which some people living nearby said would spoil the area.

Jane Couch - the 5 times world boxing champion told us they want to take their campaign to the top and they want to say to councillors: "Listen, you're effecting young people's lives here. It's not just about the football ground and applying for that, it's about getting young people into sport."

New Support For Ex Public Sector Workers

It's thought 54,000 public sector workers in the South West lost their jobs last year.

In a bid to help tackle the issue the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has produced a new guide and website with the help of Bristol based recruitment experts Resource Solutions Group Plc (RSG) and Hays.

The idea of the CHOICES guide is to show workers it's easy to transfer their skills into the private sector and also includes advice on how to approach redundancy, start a new business or go on to further education.

Colin Skellett, Chair of the LEP, said: "The prospect of redundancy is always a daunting one, but we hope that this guide will go some way to helping those faced with the prospect of redundancy make the right decision on what to do next.

"It's widely recognised that a huge amount of talent exists in the public sector - skills that the private sector would benefit from greatly. For example, highly marketable skills that are gained in the public sector include, but are not limited to, the management of multi-million pound budgets, compliance with complex regulatory or legislative requirements and the management of complex, highly political stakeholder relationships.

"Whilst these skills are transferable to other roles elsewhere within the public sector, those who find themselves at a career crossroads may take the opportunity to look further afield, be it by joining the private sector or setting up their own business or consultancy."

Mike Beesley, CEO at Bristol-based national organisation RSG, said: "We're pleased to have the opportunity to work with the LEP and Hays Recruitment to produce this guide. We hope it will prove helpful for public sector employees thinking about alternative career avenues and promotes the sought after, transferable skills on offer in the public sector.

"In the wake of widespread job losses, we believe that encouraging the transition of public sector workers into the private sector is vitally important for the local economy. This guide contains some encouraging examples of people who have made the move with enormous success, and we hope it will go a long way to challenging the perception of public sector workers amongst private sector employers."

Chris Jefferies Coverage From Police Tip-Off

That's according to the editor of the Daily Mirror, Richard Wallace who has been speaking at the Leveson inquiry into press standards.

The newspaper is one of eight which was forced to pay damages to Chris Jefferies following a series of defamatory stories about him after his arrests in the Jo Yeates murder investigation.

Wallace told the inquiry information from 'off-the-record' briefings from Avon and Somerset Police had indicated that Mr Jefferies was 'the right man' prompting their articles on the former school teacher. He admitted that the information affected his judgement about how they treated the story.

Mr Jefferies was later released without charge and contempt of court proceedings were also taken against several national newspapers, including the Daily Mirror which was fined £50,000.

Mr Wallace went on to apologise for the articles and added that the events had changed how he approaches similar stories.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police has told us there are no off-the-record briefings and that they are "currently examining Mr Wallace's evidence in detail."

Vincent Tabak was found guilty of the murder Jo Yeates in October 2011 at Bristol Crown Court and sentenced to a minimum of 20 years.

Bristol City Community Trust Ambassador, David James said: "I have to say, I'm looking forward to my new role as a guest coach. The development centres are a great way of helping to develop young players.

Plans announced today by Education Secretary Michael Gove have angered teaching unions, who've called the move unfair.

Teachers who fail to perform in the classroom will find themselves in the "firing line" - and risk losing their jobs within just one term.

Peter Sergeant from the National Teachers Union South West said: "We are very unhappy about changes to the performance management system.

"It does not need changing in this way, it is very unfair, and teachers will not be happy about it.

Bristol's Cricket Ground Plans Rejected

Last night, councillors turned down the £10m plans to expand the cricket ground in Bristol - the club are now warning it could be the end of cricket in the city.

Club chief executive Tom Richardson described the vote of six to four against granting planning permission as a "massive disappointment".

The plans could have seen up to 17,500 seats built at the ground as well as 147 flats - which would have been built in a 6 storey block.

It was that part of the development the councillors were against because some people living nearby said it would spoil the area.

The club can now either appeal against the decision, put in a new set of plans or walk away - which could see the end of cricket in the city.

We're expecting them to issue a more detailed statement later today.

Music Returns To Ashton Court

The organisers of BrisFest are bringing music back to the estate.

The old Ashton Court Festival ran for 33 years before going bankrupt in 2007 which sparked the formation of The Bristol Festival Community Group.

They then created BrisFest on the Harbourside which has continued to grow every year with 25,000 attending last year's two day festival.

After out-growing their spot at the Lloyds Amphitheatre, organisers are moving the event to its 'spiritual home' at Ashton Court.

It'll take place over the weekend of September 22nd and 23rd with room for 40,000 people over the two days.

Commercial Director and Trustee, Olly Mochizuki, said: "We definitely take inspiration from the old Ashton Court Festival. But for us it's very much about launching BrisFest up here and we're all obviously very excited to be moving to the site because we can build some fantastic areas within the site and really just increase the size and scale of the festival and give Bristol a festival they can be proud of."

Nearly 10,000 tickets for the event have already been sold, "That just goes to show how much support there is for BrisFest at Ashton Court, selling thousands of tickets before we've even announced any headliners or artists is just fantastic." added Olly, "I like to think its testament to all the hard work we've put in over the past five years, where people know what to expect from The Bristol Festival Community Group."

He added that the expansion of the event isn't just good news for music lovers: "Sometimes it's somewhat understated the actual financial benefit from pulling in thousands and thousands of people into the area is definitely a good thing for the city and the South West in general because almost all of our contractors and companies that we work with, they're all local businesses."

People can still get tickets early and organiser Poppy Stephenson is sure they'll go quickly: "We're well on our way to 10,000 and we expect a sell-out event."

"BrisFest 2012 at Ashton Court is going to be an extravaganza of music, street art, theatre, comedy and circus, the likes of which Bristol has never seen before. We're going to give this great city a festival it can be proud of."

Photo Taken Of Sleeping Criminal In Bristol - By Stolen Laptop

19 year old Rastin Khalaji has been given a 12 month community order after computer software tracked down the stolen computer he was using and took a picture of him.

The victim - a student who lived in Cotham had installed a free programme could 'Prey', which tracks your computer if it's stolen and sends emails to let you know when it's being used.

It can even take pictures of the offender using the webcam.

The laptop had been taken from a shared house on Saturday August 19th. The next night when it was being used by Rastin Khalaji, the programme was recording everything he was doing and sending email alerts to the victim.

Acting Detective Inspector Caroline Stainer of the Priority Crime Team in Bristol, explains: "The victim was a student living in a shared house in Cotham. She came home late on a Saturday night to find she had been burgled and her laptop was missing.

"She went to a friend's and activated a software application she had installed free on her laptop called Prey.

"In the morning the victim had received an email from the software company which stated that the laptop had been used at 3am, gave a GPS location of the WiFi address it was connected to, a list of sites that had been visited and even took a photograph of the person using the laptop while he was sleeping.

"The victim rang us and it carried on giving real time updates, which allowed us to use it in investigations, leading us to arrest Khalaji that very same day."

And it's not the first case in Bristol which has helped re-unite owners with their stolen or lost property using tracking software:

Ice Hockey Team Raise Their Concerns At Rink Meeting

More than 30 members of the Bristol Pitbulls Ice Hockey team attended a meeting last night to discuss the future of the Bristol Ice Rink.

The rink's owners, Unite want to have it developed into student flats above the Academy on Frogmore Street, but it leaves two Ice Hockey Teams and a number of professional figure skaters without a place to practice in the City.

Talking about the meeting last night, founder of the Bristol Pitbulls Ice Hockey Team, Richie Hargreaves said: "A lot of people use that rink, it was just gathering up information, seeing what advice we could get, and raising a couple of questions, to see if we had a leg to stand on, really.

"Now that it's been logged, it'll be talked about at the next council meeting. And we've yet to speak to Unite, who own the rink, to see if they'll be able to accommodate us."

Cricket Ground Plans Discussed

The controversial plans to re-develop the cricket ground in Bristol could be given the go-ahead tonight by the City Council.

Bosses at the home of Gloucestershire County Cricket Club want to spend £10million developing the ground by adding extra seating and better facilities.

They say the project it's vital to the future of the club and international sport in Bristol.

Part of the development also includes building nearly 150 flats in a six storey apartment block which will help to generate the cash needed for the whole scheme.

However, there has been heavy opposition to this part of the proposal by local residents.

350 Bristol Jobs Could Go

TV Licensing workers in the city could be made redundant.

Capita has announced plans today to close the Bristol office as the work is being moved to other sites in the UK.

Approximately 200 posts will be transferred to the company's site in Darwen, Lancashire, with up to 80 specialist jobs being kept at a separate

site in Bristol.

Posts will also go at their offices in Glasgow.

The Communication Workers' Union (CWU) is calling the move "callous".

Andy Furey, CWU national official, said: "This is devastating news for workers in Bristol, Glasgow and elsewhere and a terrible way to start 2012. It's a callous act by Capita management who have put commercial interests ahead of jobs and people.

"It appears that Capita has sacrificed the livelihoods of people in Bristol, Glasgow and elsewhere as cost savings to win the BBC TV Licence contract, rather than finding legitimate savings elsewhere. Hot on the heels of the move to Salford, the BBC licence fee freeze agreed by Mark Thompson is now responsible for job losses outside of the Corporation. This is the reality of that decision - unemployment. It's irresponsible and unfair.

"Capita management seem to be punishing staff in Bristol and Glasgow who have fought hard for a decent pay rise in recent months. By cutting these jobs they lose experienced and dedicated staff which can't be good for business continuity.

"We will be working closely with our members over the coming weeks to see how jobs can be protected and what options are open to them. We're completely shocked by Capita's callous attitude towards long-standing employees and see this as a direct attack on union rights. We will work hard to ensure union representation is retained in this giant company."

High Speed Rail Still In the Pipeline?

The South West might have to wait for a high speed rail network but the campaign to bring it here continues.

The government has today announced the country's first high speed rail network will be between London and Birmingham.

The first phase of the £32billion project will slash journey times between the two cities with future plans to extend the line up to Manchester and Leeds.

The current proposals might leave the South West out but The Great Western Partnership, which is made up of councils and business leaders in the region, will continue to lobby for the area to be included at a later date.

In the meantime, the electrification of the Great Western Mainline means that we're not going to miss out on improved journey times to London.

"We have got the electrification programme coming in, it starts next year with the building of the special trains which they will need to construct the electrification of the line." said Nigel Hutchings, Director of Bristol's Chamber of Commerce.

The work will improve the route between Cardiff, Bristol and Didcot, at a cost of £704 million.

He added: "It is a big step forward and in fact we'll see better connectivity in to Heathrow as well from Reading as being part of any kind of electrification and high speed route that will come out of London and come West."

However, the work won't deter the Partnership from pushing for any future high speed links from coming to the West and Nigel doesn't think this project will count against us compared to other regions where no improvements have been made:

"That's a fair thought, but The Great Western Partnership have identified that they want to make sure High Speed Route Three I suppose it'll be, will be coming into the West.

"We are already talking to government about lobbying for the next high speed route which we hope will come West and into South Wales but the time of that I can't possibly speculate on."

Survey On Police Council Tax Contribution

There's only a few days left to have your say on a Council Tax freeze by Avon and Somerset Police Authority.

The organisation sets the budget for our police and if they freeze the funding they receive from our Council Tax, for this year; they'll be given a 3 percent bonus by the government.

But in the future, that bonus won't be available, meaning the authority could lose as much as £2.5 million.

Police Authority Chair Dr Peter Heffer said: "The freeze sounds good on paper but is actually quite short-sighted and stores up bigger problems for us the following year. We know that if we take the one off payment the council tax will not be increased."

Avon and Somerset Police Authority is set to deliver £12.4m savings this financial year and faces further savings of £11.5m for 2012/13.

Dr Heffer added: "These are difficult decisions to make but ultimately it's our residents we need to bring with us. We really need to hear whether they want us to just consider the short term or to make a strategic decision for the future benefit of the service. We understand that every household budget is under pressure and any rise in the policing part of the council tax will be felt, however it's important to outline the decisions we face in February."

There are just five days left to complete the survey on the issue before they make the final decision.

You can take part in the survey at www.consultation.avonandsomerset.police.uk.

This week, an attempt to save the site from being demolished failed.

Bristol Rovers Sack Paul Buckle

He's been relieved of his duties after just seven months with the club.

Buckle was brought in back in May last year but has failed to turn Rovers' fortunes around.

They currently sit 19th in the League Two table and suffered four straight defeats over the Christmas period.

Assistant Manager, Shaun North will take charge until a permanent replacement can be found.

In a statement on the club's website, Chairman Nick Higgs said: "We are all very disappointed that this appointment has not worked out.

"Although we are aware that we need to find stability at the club, we felt we could not go any further with the current situation as the threat of relegation was becoming too real.

"We started the season with a great deal of hope for a successful campaign, but this has not been the case so far, despite promising early form.

"Our aim this season was to strive for promotion, and that has obviously not happened, so we felt we needed to make a change.

Book Shop Saved By Community

The future of a second-hand bookshop in Clevedon is secure after thousands of pounds is raised by local residents.

The store, in Clevedon, North Somerset, will reopen on New Year's Eve after an appeal for help led to almost 300 people investing money to become "co-owners" of a community bookshop co-operative.

The shop had been open for 14 years but was facing closure after the owner announced his retirement.

Volunteers and members of the new co-operative have spent the past few weeks painting and decorating the shop before tomorrow's opening.

Angela Everitt, secretary of the new co-operative, said: "We've have been overwhelmed by the support that we have received. Our aim was to attract a large number of investors who, as co-owners, will have a say in how the enterprise is run.

"People have invested from just £10 to raise a total of £7,500 which, coupled with loan money and grants, has enabled the community to save this store.

"Members and volunteers have worked hard to refurbish the store, new flooring has gone down and the final task will be to stock our great new bookcases.

"We hope that members and customers alike will join us on New Year's Eve and, this also gives any last-minute investors a chance to drop off their applications."

Michael Fairclough, the Co-operative Group's head of community and co-operative investment, said: "This is another example of a determined community having a say in the running of a business or service important to them and illustrates how communities, by embracing the co-operative model, can support the economy for future generations and tackle some of the unprecedented challenges facing our society and the environment.

"The co-operative business model offers an alternative and robust approach to enterprise that is contributing to the rebuilding of a more balanced and stable economy.

"As the general public becomes increasingly concerned for environment, accountability and sustainability and, more and more people rediscover the benefits of self-help and mutual ownership, we will see co-operatives playing an increasing part in fostering the creation and growth of future enterprises."

Bristol Church Remembers Jo Yeates

Prayers said in Clifton on the first anniversary of her death last December.

Prayers have been said in a Bristol church to remember Joanna Yeates, the young woman who died a year ago.

Throughout Saturday, people turned up to the Christ Church in Clifton to light candles and write in a card of condolence that will be sent on to her family.

Earlier this week, her boyfriend, Greg Reardon spoke of his pain at losing the love of his life and said they would probably have married one day.

He said: 'It was more about taking things one step at a time and seeing where life took us than having a 'five-year plan' or whatever.

'I've visited her grave and will continue to do so.

We are in the process of organising a proper headstone and it will be nice to see that in place.

'I'm not sure specifically what I'll do to remember Jo in the future but I'm certainly not going to forget her.'

Vincent Tabak was convicted of her murder in October at Bristol Crown Court and was jailed for life.

Bristol Rovers Sign Historic Agreement For New Stadium

The club, UWE and Sainsbury's have signed the legal agreements to they can sell The Memorial Stadium and build a new one.

In June the club announced plans to join up with UWE and build a new 20,000 seat stadium on land next to the University's Frenchay campus.

Since then, they've been talking to people living nearby to find out what they think.

Nick Higgs, Chairman of Bristol Rovers, said: "This agreement is a significant step in securing a sustainable future for the Club. The move to the Frenchay Campus will be fantastic for our supporters as they will be able to take advantage of the excellent transport links, including the A4174, Parkway and Abbey Wood stations and a new car park. Local residents and students will benefit from fantastic new facilities.”

But the only way they're going to be able to afford it is by selling their current site at The Memorial Stadium to a supermarket - and that's going to be Sainsbury's.

Today, they've revealed their first set of plans showing what they'd like to build on the site. As well as a supermarket there's going to be housing, coummunity facilities, homes and parking.

Ben Littman, Regional Development Executive for Sainsbury’s, said: "Sainsbury’s proposed redevelopment of the Memorial Stadium will bring a number of benefits to the local economy and community, including up to 350 new full and part time jobs, increased competition in weekly supermarket shopping, space for local businesses to grow and facilities for the local community.

In the new year, Sainsbury's will launch a public consultation to find out what people think about the plans and have their chance to say what should be included.

"We look forward to meeting with residents to discuss the proposal. This is a fantastic opportunity to invest in Horfield; speaking with the community will help to ensure that we propose the right mix of facilities in a development that is of an appropriate size and scale for the area.”

Professor Steve West, Vice-Chancellor at UWE Bristol, said: "I am delighted that we have been able to take this initiative for Bristol and South Gloucestershire a step further to reality.

"At a time when belts are tightening it is good to see this ambition being realised with the investment and growth flowing into the region. The UWE Stadium we hope will also allow the University to reach out to young people and our diverse communities across the region.”

West Country Schoolgirl Breaks World Record

Amelia skis 97 miles in sub zero temperatures to South Pole.

Amelia Hempleman-Adams has become the youngest person to ski to the South Pole at the age of sixteen.

On Friday (December 9) at 1.30 GMT am Amelia reached the South Pole with her father, the adventurer, David Hempleman-Adams, after skiing 97 miles. On the final day they skied 14 miles and felt ‘elated and tired’ on reaching the South Pole.

The intrepid duo and a small team started their expedition from The Farthest Point South where Ernest Shackleton had to turn back on January 9, 1909.

Amelia spent 17 nights on the ice and endured sub zero temperatures (minus 35/minus 50 with windchill), whiteouts, 24 hour daylight and sleepless nights due to her father’s snoring.

Amelia transported to the South Pole a photograph of Ernest Shackleton and a special commemorative coin, gifts from Alexandra Shackleton, his granddaughter.

Speaking from the South Pole Amelia said, "This expedition has been an extraordinary experience. The biggest challenges were the freezing cold, dried food, pulling frozen poo in a sledge, Dad’s snoring.

The best bit has been experiencing what Dad does on expeditions. It’s the first time I’ve been on a trek with him and now I know what it’s like. Would I do it again? I’ll have to think about that after a few nights sleep!”

Amelia, who attends Prior Park College in Bath, where she is studying for four AS levels, admitted she didn’t do any homework on the expedition despite her original good intentions.

"I brought a lot of homework with me but Dad took most of the books out of my sledge to ‘keep the weight down’. We set up camp early evening and by the time we sorted our kit out and had dinner I was shattered and aching. I think I’ll have a lot of homework to do over the Christmas holidays!”

Amelia, who was the youngest person in the team by several decades, admits she most missed her friends..

"I’ve really missed my friends and want to thank them for all their messages which kept me going. I’m most looking forward to a comfy bed, a shower and some chocolate brownies.”

David, who led the Nimrod expedition, was the first Briton to reach the South Pole solo and unsupported (in 1996).

He said, "Amelia has done amazingly well. I’m very proud of her. This expedition was probably the most challenging for me.

I’m very protective of Amelia who is my youngest daughter.

It’s one thing going off on an expedition on your own but another thing when you are looking after your own teenager daughter.

Obviously, I wanted to make sure she returned to the UK with all her fingers and toes!”

"Shackleton has always been my hero and it was a special experience to share those last 97 miles with Amelia. We had the most unbelievable weather and feel Shackleton looked after us.”

Turnip Prize Announced In West Country Pub

Prize has been awarded to the most "rubbish piece of art work."

This year’s prize has been awarded to Jim Drew for his work entitled "Jamming with Muddy Waters” (A large jar containing muddy water and jam) at a ceremony held at The New Inn, Wedmore, Somerset.

The prize is always a turnip mounted on a six-inch nail.

Organisers said, "They were delighted with the lack of effort taken to create the work.”

Jim said, "I am amazed to win this most coveted art award on my first occasion and I truly feel that the lack of effort has really paid off. I aimed low and luckily reached far lower than I could have dreamed. I am amazed at what my mediocrity and indifference has achieved”.

Organiser Trevor Prideaux said, "This year’s event attracted a total of 69 entries, which by strange coincidence is exactly the same amount as last year. It’s fantastic that Jim has won, he clearly has what it takes to be recognised in modern art circles and will be remembered in art history for no time at all!

It’s mud in the eye of the Turner Prize which is ageist and I believe that over the last thirteen years the artists entering ‘The Turnip Prize’ have created by far better works than Nicholas Serota and The Tate Britain Gallery could ever wish to exhibit.”

Somerset Snow Tweets

"Gritter Twitter" set up to enable information about weather, roads and gritters sent out to mobile phones.

Following two harsh winters, residents in Somerset can now get up to date information - by Twitter.

Short bursts of essential information will be posted on Twitter through the @somersetgritter page when freezing conditions are likely or the county is dealing with snow.

The account is dedicated to passing on details of weather forecasts received by the highways depots, and publicising when the gritter fleet has gone into action.

Somerset County Council Cabinet Member for Highways, Cllr Harvey Siggs, said: "I want us all to tackle winter together in Somerset, and on top of all the other services we provide, one way the Council can contribute to this collective effort is to pass on important information.

The Twitter account means we can let everyone know when the main roads are being salted and share our forecasts to help residents and businesses prepare. This might be by planning journeys or safely spreading salt around where they live and work.

The public need to be well informed about our winter maintenance service and feel like a vital player in the team when we tackle winter together. The Somerset Gritter account is a superb way to do that instantly and effectively."

Drugs Crackdown In Weston

More arrests have been made by Avon and Somerset police in their fight against drug dealers.

Police in Weston-super-Mare say they have carried out another day of action against drug dealers in and around the resort. .

Two weeks after 13 people were arrested under the banner of Operation Relentless, officers arrested another 15 people on suspicion of a variety of drug-related offences.

Detective Inspector Mark Rolfe said: "I was very clear two weeks ago that our day of action then was only the beginning.

"I warned Weston's criminal minority that they will not know where, when and how we are going to strike next, but that they should be under no misapprehension because we WOULD strike again.

"That's what we have done today, with a particular focus on criminals operating in and around the town centre.

"Today is the first of December; we have entered the traditional season of goodwill, but I want to make it very clear that this good-will certainly does not extend to the

minority whose activities have a negative impact on the law-abiding majority who live in, work in, and visit Weston-super-Mare.

"And just as I said a fortnight ago, I say again to those criminals who we have not visited today, now is not the time for you to relax and think that, because we have not knocked on your door, we are not going to.

"We will come knocking. You will not know when, but rest assured we are determined to do everything we can to make Weston an even safer place than it already is.

"Our determination has been strengthened even further by the positive feedback we've had to our first day of action two weeks ago.

"We've heard comments from residents, prominent local business people and others, all along the lines of how pleased they were to see police taking positive action.

"My message to them is to thank them for their support, and to assure them that we intend to repay their confidence in us by working even harder.

"We remain relentless in our determination to disrupt, dismantle and destroy drug dealing and all activities associated with it."
