NHS Bristol says it wants seven in ten people in the city to be visiting an NHS dentist.

Health bosses are re-stating their commitment to make it easier to see a dentist, as a new NHS surgery opens today on Old Market Street.

It will serve 6,000 patients a year, and will work alongside a service that opened on Highridge Road in Bishopsworth earlier this week.

The NHS are adding 30,000 places across the city in a bid to improve access.

Deborah Evans, NHS Bristol chief executive, said: "The opening of this surgery is a really positive sign for the area and for Bristol.

"With 6,000 more places available at the Old Market surgery and more than 25,000 in total becoming available this year we hope that everyone who wants to will see an NHS dentist will be able to.

"We recognise that NHS dentistry means a lot to Bristol people and we want to make it more accessible, that is why we have invested millions into improving access."

The latest statistics show 60% of people in the city saw a dentist in December 2009 - 5% above the national average. NHS Bristol wants to increase the figure to 70%.
