Saturday, March 13th 2010 07:30

A caravan park just outside Bristol has been voted amongst the top ten in the country.

The Practical Caravan say they had thousands of readers vote for their top 100 sites in the UK for 2010.

Nigel  Donnelly, editor of the magazine said: "Our annual Top 100 Sites awards are voted for by caravanners who have paid to stay.  Nobody votes for a site they don't like and I am confident that the sites on the  list represent really great stays."

Bath Chew Valley Caravan Park in Bishop Sutton was voted the fourth best caravan park in the country, missing out on the top spot to sites in Dorset, Devon and Cornwall.

This is the top ten:

1    Ross Park Hill Farm, Ipplepen, Newton Abbot, Devon
2    South Lytchett Manor Caravan and Camping Park, Poole, Dorset
3    Trevornick Holiday Park, Newquay, Cornwall
4    Bath Chew Valley Caravan Park, Bishop Sutton, Somerset
5    Dornafield, Newton Abbot, Devon
6    The Laurels Holiday Park, Wadebridge, Cornwall
7    Kneps Farm Holiday Park, Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancs
8    Rushin House Caravan Park, Co Fermanagh, Northern Ireland
9    Bron Derw Touring Park, Llanrwst, Conwy, Wales
10   Plough Lane Caravan Site, Chippenham, Wilts

According to the Caravan Club, caravanning in the UK is a £3billion  market, accounting for 19% of all UK holiday nights.

The club say that UK holidays have been one of the few winners during the financial woes of  the past couple of years. With the weak pound making European holidays expensive they say many Brits opted to stay at home. As a result, campsite occupancy went through  the roof  last  year.  They say the two main touring clubs both reported huge increases in membership. The Camping and Caravanning Club added 65,000 new members  in  2009, taking  total  membership to more than a quarter of a million households.

Nikki Nichol is from the caravan club: "I think this has a lot to do with the fact that we've had a credit crunch, we're still experiencing it and people are seeing that for the price of a package holiday for a family of four, you can actually buy a second hand caravan and every Friday night becomes a holiday."

She also told us she's not surprised Chew Valley was a hit with voters: "Caravanning is an excellent way to explore what's in our back garden, often. It's a wonderful way to get away, holiday and relax. The Mendip Hills and West Country attractions make for wonderful days out."
