Students at Bristol Metropolitan Academy
Thousands of pupils achieve top results in their exams.
Bristol schools are celebrating after another record set of GCSE results today.
There have been impressive results, with more than one in five passes being at A or A* grade.
Several academies showed spectacular rises in results.
The newest, Bristol Metropolitan Academy, which opened a year ago, saw 85 per cent of students gain at least five A*-C passes, compared with 42 per cent last year.
Independent schools reported strong performances, with 100 per cent pass rates.
Commenting on today's GCSE results Andy Woolley, South West Regional Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers' union said;
"Overall the GCSE results are again a massive vote of confidence in young people and their teachers. The continuing improvement in results in the sciences, and English and mathematics demonstrates the high quality and effectiveness of comprehensive education.
"Yet again, of real concern is the decline in the study of modern foreign languages, particularly French and German. This was reflected in last week's A level results. We find it extraordinary that French which has for so long been core to the secondary curriculum should now have dropped out of the top ten GCSEs taken by young people and we urge the Government to come up with a coherent policy for ensuring that all young people acquire at least one modern foreign language.
"For those who criticise the GCSE they should reflect on the negative impact that criticism has on the morale and confidence of young people.While there are strong arguments for reviewing the overall examination system, as the Tomlinson Report did a few years ago, GCSEs as they stand represent both rigour and quality and young people can be proud of the grades they have achieved ".
