Monday, August 30th 2010 07:00

The Bristol Royal Infirmary will not comment on compensation payments made to patients who were misdiagnosed.

An inquiry is already taking place into claims tissue samples were not handled correctly at a laboratory at the hospital.

The lab deals with samples from hospitals across the city and 26 cases are being investigated.

The inquiry is also looking at the results of 3,500 random tissue samples to check the work of pathologists.

The Sunday Telegraph has reported at least two victims of mistakes have been compensated, including a woman who received £12,000 after wrongly having a breast removed.

A BRI spokesperson told us the hospital had "nothing to add" to the report.

Peter Walsh, Chief Executive of the Action Against Medical Accidents group, says patients who're covered by the inquiry need more information.

He said: "If the trust is owning up to mistakes and making payments of compensation to injured patients or their families that is a very good thing."

"What is really worrying is the lack of transparency and the arrogance with which the patients have been dealt with in this case.

"The key to learning lessons is not just asking the right questions, it's about being totally transparent.

"It has to be acknowledged that as well as serving transparency involving patients or their families can add value [to the inquiry]."
